Not a lot of reviews talking about the gym so figured I'd do one. Was considering joining the Y and this branch was my closest one, but the gym is woefully lacking unless you're only doing cardio or calisthenics. No barbells, no squat rack, can't even do a proper bench press anywhere. All of which are foundational to properly build build muscle and do proper resistance training in a balanced way. But, if all you need from a gym is to keep your joints healthy and moving, it'll do the job.
The gym is also very small - which isn't always a bad thing. But there wasn't much space to "breathe" if you were working out and not using machines, or even any space to do something like yoga. Positives - the staff were nice, the free group exercises seemed good (if you're into that sort of thing), it seemed well maintained. It was also not very busy at all during a peak time. I also liked that all the east bay Y's are bundled together.
That said, I feel like if all you need from a gym is what this Y has to offer, you're better off paying much less to go to planet fitness instead, if you are willing to drive.

I’ve been a member less than a year and I’ve witnessed 3 fights. 1) in the sauna. Some men wanted a wet sauna and others a dry sauna. Shouting and cursing ensued when they couldn’t agree 2) in the locker room. A man was changing in the bathroom and not in the locker area and another man cursed at him telling him not to (no children were present) 3) two men were getting into each other’s faces in the weight room over…? Cursing and stare downs ensued while the rest of us on the treadmills watched on. 4) I’ve seen grown men get naked in the family changing room (this is not a fight I witnessed but could easily lead to one). The “family” “Christian” ymca of the Willamette valley had better start taking serious action against such individuals or others just like them will be emboldened to do likewise and perhaps worse. Administration seems to be soft when it comes to maintaining a peaceful and calm order. I’ve documented these incidents. If the day comes when a repeat offender, whom administration refuses to remove, physically hurts someone, there will be a lawsuit. I’m sure of it.

This gym is the best because they have light weight hand weights which no other gyms do. When I'm trying to get back into shape, I need 1, 2, 3 and 5 pound weights. Other gyms only have 1 set that is typically already being used or none. Also the staff at the Albany branch YMCA are too notch. They pay attention when I scanned in, pronounced my name correctly and went out of the yr way to sign me up for a class that I had missed. Clean, new equipment & warm accessible classes. Love this gym

I love this little YMCA! Yes it's small but with a great big heart. Mary D'Elia especially and the rest of the staff and wonderful community of people who attend this little gem of a place and make it a welcoming fun place to be. I'm talking mainly about the fitness classes because that's what I do there. Mary's classes are great! And I love the dance teacher. Cato plays great music and is terrific at coming up with new routines and making it fun. Yoga, Pilates, Dance, Senior strength training, Zumba! It's fun to be at the Albany YMCA! weightlifting

This rogue organization does not honor the national YMCA membership and provides no reciprocity to members of out of town YMCA's.

It's a friendly, clean gym. The people who work there greet you by your name. Upstairs are the cardio machines. Downstairs are the free weights, Cybex weight machines and also cardio machines. No in-person exercise classes (for now). For the health of the members & staff people wear their masks and clean off the machines after use.

Go to a another gym not this one! I have gone to this YMCA for years and I have had one racist situation after the other from members and I'm tired of being insulted. Recently the manager Mary was informed of a unsafe situation with another member not honouring my request to to socially distance and by using 1 machine between us and she was on her phone . She told me to shut up etc. When I ask a staff person to ask the manager to come upstairs to address this the manager looked at me from saw me from downstairs and never came upstairs to address the issues. The women with her mask below her nose and using a machine on top of me who told me to shut up when asked to move down 1 machine and to not use her phone. I had to call the manager later who said I prefer to let member resolve their own issues. That's why you ignore a dues paying member! What are you a MANAGER or just window dressing or could it be because I'm one of the few woman color at this gym it doesn't matter if someone yells at me gets in my space and is creating a unsafe environment during a PANDEMIC. The managers attitude was it ain't my problem it members have concerns but it will be if someone gets sick Covid from your facility cuz the health department will shut you down for 10-14 days! The racial biases in this place is too much and lack respect for the health and safety of ALL members is CRAZY. Spray bottles, misplaced mask mean nothing if people are too closet to each other and are breathing on each other in this tight space of a gym. I am going to explore other options where they take member health and safety serious and aren't racist by treating people like they are invisible or don't matter. And where the manager understands customer service and does more than walking around looking at herself in the mirror.

Great community gym. Friendly helpful staff. Very clean. Reasonable COVID protection measures, such as distancing and cleaning the equipment after you use it.

I lived on Madison Street in Albany between Solano Avenue and Buchanan Street for a little over three years and this was my go-to gym for that time period (I moved away in 2019). Membership here is a membership to YMCAs in the East Bay Area. This was nice as it allowed me to use the Downtown Berkeley YMCA when I wanted to get a workout in during a break at work. My routine usage of the facilities were the cardio room and the locker rooms/rest rooms. I enjoyed the set-up of the cardio room upstairs, there were a few each of different types of machines which enabled me to vary my workouts depending on how busy it was and what machines were open. I loved the stationary bicycles. They had programs/workouts you could do that provided natural scenery as you bicycled. As you biked up/down roads in the mountains and through towns the program would give you different trivia about the places. Fun and informative and helped make it feel like I wasn't in a gym while working out. The rowing machines were especially well placed. On some machines I have managed to move the machine backwards as I row... Here the machines are put so the back of the machine is against the wall. Helpful if you don't want to cover the gym floor on a stationary work out machine. Staff was friendly no matter the time of day I visited. When I made it in to the YMCA in the mornings it was a great start to my day. I also enjoyed evening workouts, the last hour or so before the gym closed it would quiet down a little. Great way to end the day too!
