I love being in Alameda. I like the fact that I am surrounded by water when there. The downtown area is very pleasant as well. A nice place to walk around and have lunch or dinner.

Lots of bars and shops. Great food too. Improved street calms traffic and makes it more walker friendly. I love a complete street. One with bike lanes, parking spots, and planters between the street and the road. Many prefer the opposite - a more vehicle focused street that becomes a freeway of cars speeding or doing donuts. I don't need that - there is so much of that in any other city. The variety of stores could probably be better as there are a lot of similar restaurants - but there are great unique places too that stand out. Parking is easy for me. I'm usually lucky to grab a spot on the street - and if not there is a large parking garage a block away. There is some historic interest here. Buildings are old and beautiful. I like The Star pizza place. It was a bar and a bank long before that. My friend Jeff worked at that bar and from what I hear that bar owner had questionable ethics. Believe it or not talk around a small town like this gets around and it went out of business after his expensive remodel. Star gets to enjoy all that work at the sweat of that man's unpaid workers. I sit there relax and enjoy my pizza on Park. Why not? Its delicious.

this post should be titled "Historic Park Street Business Improvement Area". this is an actual plan in Alameda. member associates work to build up Park Ave. area businesses from Otis Dr. to Blanding Ave. the "historic" part involves preserving old buildings like the Tucker, the post office building and others. this will perserve the small town appeal of Alameda, it will also deter large scale development that will tear down "old" buildings and build "new" shopping centers/parking lots. as far as the mix of ethnic eateries & manicure places, it's up to market forces to decide:whoever pays the rent decides what services to offer. prospective patrons decide who gets their $$. property/business owners in the area have a general understanding of what types of businesses are acceptable.

Downtown Alameda, the Park Street shopping area, is a solid 3 stars. It's not fantastic because it is very repetitious. There are at least a half a dozen Chinese restaurants and manicure pedicure shops. Parking is often a nightmare, and the traffic is far more stressful than it needs to be. As a former Alameda resident, and a current Oakland resident, I still spend a lot of time yeah in Alameda downtown area. There are a few pretty good places to eat. The Alameda movie theater is convenient for locals, but it is about 10 years behind on comfort. Almost weekly I come to Alameda for Starbucks, a haircut, and to eat out. Troy, la penca Azul, these two restaurants are well worth a trip to Alameda.

This shopping district is the best area in Alameda. It has everything from restaurants to shops. The service is good and very safe to walk around at night.
