LOVE their plants and the people working there. I bought five roses there three years ago, and despite being attacked by pests and critters, cut down aggressively in the midst of growing season (by my trigger happy gardener, lol), torrential rainstorms, and extreme heat over those last years, they are all thriving. I think the key is to tell them about the conditions in your garden - the soil, sun, water, etc. And if you're unsure about soil conditions, bring a little bucket from your garden and get advice - they are brilliant with that!

I come here about once a month to buy plants for my backyard and I have known the owner for years. He is knowlegable and has always treated me with respect.

BEST Nursery in LA. Huge collection of gorgeous trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Beautifully kept. Looks like a fairy garden. Far bigger selection than your typical garden center. The majority of the reviews are five stars. The few that are not I would say have some empathy. The owner has been there for over three decades and has worked hard to build a very difficult business. He has a little bit of a mobility challenge and is no doubt in pain. He was more than courteous to me and whatever extra in depth info I need I can Google it.Highly recommend for all your garden needs. Here is my Bougie. I will be repotting her soon. Only $35.00. Healthy and much bigger than big box stores. Thanks so much!

Selection of plants should probably get a 4.5. Quality of plants should probably get a 4. Pricing should probably get a 3. But the lack of customer service, and the absolute rudeness of the owner would receive one star at best. I’ve lived in the area for over 30 years and have probably gone here a half a dozen times for convenience sake only. Of course, quality changes in the very hot heat of the summer when some of these reviews were written. I can accept that. But the only consistency I’ve seen is how unhelpful and rude the man who owns this Nursery continues to be decade after decade.

I used this place several years ago and the plants seemed to die very quickly. I decided to give it another try. I spent hundreds of dollars there (my mistake) and a number of the plants died right away. Our gardener said that they were in bad shape. I called the owner and he wouldn't do anything about it. Stay away from this place. The plants at Walmart are better quality.

I spent hundreds of dollars on plants here and a number of them died right away. Our gardener said that they were very poor quality. I called to see what the place would do and they were rude and basically hung up on me. I had the same experience several years ago and I thought I would give it another try. I will never go back. The plants at Walmart seem to be better quality.

Owner knows his stuff and yes, he flies by his own set of rules. But the plants I got were nice and hardy. And the BEST garden to car customer service! If you go there knowing that it's not Home Depot and while it's not - his prices are fair - then you can have a good time picking out plants and asking about the background and usage of each plant. -- That kind of service is not going to happen at Home Depot.I liked the fact that the owner and the worker shadowed me while shopping so I could get quick on the spot answers and pricing. The guy does know the prices in his head. He'll give you a quote and if it's not what you want to spend - just keep walking and looking.Because they were shadowing me, I could get them to grab plants and put them on the cart - pretty much a concierge service if you ask me.After checking out - they loaded it in my car and protected the back area with heavy duty paper. * Your not going to get Home Depot to do that for you either! Home Depot has not had the thick paper available for the last 7 years!I like the owner. He's spunky. Loves his nursery/his business and maybe going there is not everyone's cup of tea. I'm going to definitely go back for more plants and the great service.Oh - - and he loves America! Me too!

I appreciate the non-manufactured-like business feel one doesn't get from big box stores. It's not as cut and dry but the products are decent and I always find what I need.

Very rude people including the big owner. I will never shop there again. Dont waste your time or money. There are so many other garden centers in the Thousand Oaks area that will treat you with respect and kindness. These people are horrible. I wish I would have read the reviews before I shopped there. Big mistake.

Very pleasant store. The owner is very knowledgeable and answers all our questions. My wife and I love to go back, they have such beautiful plants.

I went to this nursery last Saturday with my wife who had been there once. I brought in $1000 in cash as it was my budget for our new house down the street and the owner was so rude and obnoxious I am glad I didn’t spent one dollar. First the feeling from the beginning was very odd. No one to offer any help but this big men at the entrance starring at us in a very unfriendly way. I kept asking him about prices on different plants as almost no plants have prices and while he seemed to think about the price each time I asked him why wasn’t there price marked on the pots like most other nursery ? He answered prices fly away with the wind ???? And then, in a very obnoxious tone said there are no prices because 90% of his customers don’t ask . Waoooo!!!Given the fact he gave us the impression to annoy him we left and WILL NEVER RETURN!!

I was pleasantly surprised at the healthy selection of fruit trees and plants. Much more than I see at the big box stores. I found Barat, the owner, to be quite informative and helpful with how to encourage growth and limit fungus with the fruit tree I chose. I will be sure to shop at Colorful first with any future purchases!

It's not a place for everyone. The owner, Barat, is a real character. But before you judge him, take a moment to listen to his story. He was an early employee at Amgen (when it was in a strip mall). Then Genentech. He sold his shares early to buy the nursery, which he has run ever since. Loves sports and cricket and gets up at 3 in the morning to watch. He knows a ton about plants and trees. Yes, he can be quirky. If you're trying to find faults (as some people on the reviews seem to be) there are plenty. Is he truly racist, sexist, whatever judgements people seem to have made based on a look or a grimace? Do you know his story (do you even care)? It does take willingness to suspend your own prejudices and judgments for a moment. Yes, the inside of the store is a total mess and it is a mystery how he gets his permits. But the plants and trees are generally good; he knows a lot more about them than anyone you could find in a big box store, and - if you listen - he has some stories to tell. Oh, and the helper, Wes, is as solid, old-school and hard working. as they come.
