I was looking for ribeye steaks at this Safeway location. My eyesight is not optimal so I asked a customer service rep where they were. She pointed out their location. As I looked them over, she said to me “they’re expensive, you know”. Clearly she was making a judgement that I was not someone who could afford to buy pricey cuts of meat. Why else would she have said such a thing? I wondered if she was judging me based on my part Native heritage. I could not imagine any other reason for her statement.
I went to the cashier with my items for purchase. Strangely, they told me my card was declined. This was not possible, I explained to them, as I knew I had much more than “sufficient funds”. I was told, “it must be this till.” I looked around; there was no problem with any other till in the store; customers were making their purchases and leaving so it was not an Interac POS problem. I was now certain they were “identifying” me as an impoverished individual, a second class citizen, and therefore a thief. Clearly they did not want me to leave with any of my items. Instead of giving in to their judgements and games, I told them I would wait until “the till” problem was fixed. I let them know that I knew they were trying to exclude me from the store, and I also pointed out they were wasting the time of all the customers who were waiting at this till, not just mine.
What do you know, somehow they resolved the “till” issue, and my card worked just fine.
I condemn this maltreatment by these Safeway employees inflicted on me, and in a perfect world, this would never happen again.

It's a good store. They have good meat deals at times. I just wish they had a bakery

Why have pre-made Ceasar salad for salad for sale, but no dressing?
Asked staff and was given a look like I was crazy for asked, gave rude/dumb answer
Safeway is usually good but not this one!

Deli person was sparse when it came time to put condiments on my sandwich. Kept saying she'd charge me next time. I get the exact same thing in other safeways with no issues

Good location just off the highway. They have a variety of products. Produce section, meat department and deli.

Poor higiene in the sandwich bar practiced by some of the staff in Deli, surprisingly even senior ones like a lady who works there long time.
Others do a good job, (including new hires), but the ones preparing bad-tasting sandwiches don't know that after moving from stocking or cleaning they should wash hands and put on new gloves before touching food directly.
