Von Maur Ranks as Best Department Store for Third Year in a Row

Von Maur, a 152-year-old department store chain based in Davenport, Iowa, has once again been crowned America's best department store by Newsweek magazine. For the third year running, the family-owned retailer topped Newsweek's annual rankings, beating out big-names like Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.

The ranking is a team-up between Newsweek and an industry ranking firm Statista. It is based on an independent survey of over 7,000 U.S. shoppers and evaluates retailers on product selection, customer service, store atmosphere, accessibility, and layout. Von Maur not only led the department store category but also ranked 10th overall among the 200 best places to shop in America across 40 industries.

Founded in 1872, Von Maur has grown to 37 locations across 15 states, with plans to open new stores in Pennsylvania and North Dakota in the coming months. The company is also in the middle of a $100 million store renovation project through 2029

According to Jim von Maur, the company's president, their success comes down to putting customers first. "Our simple yet effective philosophy of 'take care of our customers and the rest will come' has been the true key to our success over the last 152 years and will be for years to come," he said.

The store is known for perks like an interest-free credit card, flexible returns, free gift wrapping and shipping. Von Maur also prides itself on offering high-quality, on-trend merchandise.

According to Newsweek’s America’s Best Retailers 2024, the best supermarket in the country is an Asian-American Great Wall Supermarket, while the best fast-food restaurant title is going to a vegan chain called Next Level Burger.
