Sheetz Wants to Expand in Detroit, but Not Everyone Agrees

Sheetz Inc., the Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain, is making big moves in the Motor City. The company announced plans to open four more locations across metro Detroit, weeks before opening its first Michigan location.

"Michigan is the first new state for Sheetz in two decades and we cannot wait for people to experience this first store, and everything our company has to offer," said Travis Sheetz, president and CEO, at the March groundbreaking ceremony.

The first Michigan Sheetz will open its doors in late summer at 33380 Wick Road in Romulus. More locations are planned for Taylor, Warren, and Macomb Township, each employing around 30 people, mostly full-time.

But Sheetz's expansion plans have run into some opposition in places like Madison Heights, Rochester Hills, and Waterford. At public meetings, locals have voiced worries about more traffic, noise, and competition for local businesses.

"You guys are trying to bring in a big company that has over 700 stores," said Michael Berry, whose family owns a nearby BP gas station and Tim Hortons, at the July 10 meeting. He called for an updated traffic study, citing concerns about the impact of large trucks on local roads.

Not everyone is opposed to Sheetz's arrival. "I'm just telling you from experience as a traveler, it's a clean, safe hub to go to," said Daniel McCausland, a township resident who spoke in favor of the chain. "Give them a chance."

As a way to show commitment to the community, Sheetz announced $10,000 donations to both the Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan.
