“Following the recommendation of a client, my trip to Dan's Whetstone Company, Inc. in Pearcy, AR was everything she described and more. Having acquired a wide variety of novaculite over the summer, my interest in having them professionally evaluated was growing daily. With limited experience related to novaculite mining in particular, the opportunity to sit down and visit for hours with Mr. Kirschman and his amazing family significantly increased my knowledge base geologically, but even better than that was the feeling of gratitude I experienced as I drove away grinning from ear to ear over how much fun I had that afternoon trading stories with my new friends. This family is iconic in the novaculite mining industry and has kept the legacy going for generations. It was inspiring to hear the history of it all as Mr. Kirschman gave me a facility tour taking time to explain the significance of one fascinating example of their work after another. The experience was just as entertaining as it was informational. I've already made plans to set an appointment with their son who just happens to authenticate Native American artifacts for clients nationally and abroad. I'm pretty sure I heard "The Smithsonian" in there sonewhere. My personal collection in that arena is considerably larger and more diverse than that of my novaculite so the level of anticipation I am experiencing is through the roof! Cannot wait for the next installment of hopefully many to come in my adventures with these truly amazing people. Thank you all so much for sharing your afternoon with me.
