When I called Alex about a ticking noise in the engine I purchased he told me it was an out of adjustment valve. I rechecked all the valves and determined the valves were properly adjusted. I contacted him to share this info and he told me the hydraulic lifters take some time to fill up with oil and this is a common problem and I needed to drive the vehicle 20 to 30 minutes to get them to pump up and then readjust the valves. I followed his recommendation and the tapping noise continued. I then contacted him to share the results of his recommendations. Alex then asked me about the oil I used in the motor. I told him I broke in the engine with the oil recommended and then I installed synthetic oil. He said that was the problem because the oil is too thin and too slick to allow the hydraulic lifters to pump up. He recommended I dump the oil and add the 50W conventional oil. I followed his recommendation and the sound remained. I shared this information with Alex and he said I needed to drive the vehicle on several 20 to 30 minute drives to get the lifters flushed and pumped up and then readjust the valves. Again I followed his recommendations. Still noise. I contacted Alex again and I told him the sound makes me think it is a bad lifter. He said he would send me 2 lifters. I told him that none of the lifters felt like they weren't pumping up so I have no idea how I would know which ones to replace. A friend recommended I try the trick of pressing a wooden hammer handle on each valve until the noise stopped but nothing made the tapping noise go away. Alex told me a set of new lifters was $100 plus shipping. He could send me 2 no charge but he wouldn't send a set for free. I paid the money for the set and placed the order. These attempts to resolve the problem of the tapping noise took about 8 months. Winter was coming so I stored the vehicle in a storage facilty for the winter while waiting for the parts. The parts came in and the weather broke so I transported the vehicle back to my home garage. I installed the new lifters and changed the oil. I then readjusted the valves. The tapping noise was exactly the same. I contacted Alex by text and telephone and left a message and there was no response. It was 1 month now out of warranty. Frustrated I decided to get another opinion so I found VW specialist. They confirmed the tapping wasn't the lifters and they needed to pull the motor out and perform a full teardown to find the cause. They discovered the rivets holding the cam gear had loosened and cam gear was slapping back and forth wearing the holes into slots which was causing the tapping noise. One tooth had a chunk missing. They also found the crank journals were not aligned properly and the bearings had premature wear as a result. They also saw where the heads were repaired by welding in several places. They determined no parts of the engine were reusable. And they suggested I build another motor. I have texted, called and emailed Alex at GEX and recieved no response. I would strongly avoid using this company.

Received a bad engine with a faulty flywheel, oil leaks, knock on #3 cylinder and metal filings in the oil. Wanted money back from this sale and it took them 2 weeks of me calling them to tell me that all sales are final. They can sell a faulty product and still make a profit.

Called in as I have a car with a water cooled GTI engine from GEX. I needed advice as I need an exhaust and some other parts and hoped they had a recommendation. The lady told me they don't do them any more so she can`t help with any questions. I politely tried to ask if there was any one technical who could help me with advice on parts, as she was not technical ( as she kept telling me ). She did not really listen and hung up after getting frustrated ....classy :-(

Terrible customer service. Tried to bring a motor back for warranty repairs. Motor has less than 500 miles on it and it locked up. Arrived at their office at 4:40, website says they are open until 6. Girl in front office wouldn't let us drop off the motor, said it was after hours, even though they were there. Now we have to make another trip from Kansas City to drop it off at a later date.

A customer came in with a GEX engine installed. Us being VW people we wanted to jump to help her and help GEX since they are also VW people. The engine she obtained from GEX was having some issues. To make a long story short, we helped repair this engine at no cost while communicating with GEX of its needs to get her taken care of. We only asked that GEX pay for the $50 part. After months of going back and forth and having to call, the rep finally got lippy and they won’t pay as promised. Don’t expect support from them if you buy an engine, we did try to get her taken care of so we are glad about that but it was at our expense and with no support from GEX. In the end the engine had to go back for major failure.

I'm very glad I chose to work with GEX. This past year, I bought a 1970 VW Beetle, and the engine blew up after 2 weeks. I ordered a totally new engine build from GEX, and they built it and shipped it to me in NC in 2 months. They kept me up to date with status updates, and they answered questions I had along the way. Many thanks to GEX for helping me restore my Bug!

I ordered one of his "high performance Long Blocks and did not get have the stuff he advertised and when I asked him about it he told me to look at the last paragraph in a complete different link window state he has the right to change any part with out notice so I go got 3 different pushrods cylinders that were not what I expected and was pretty much told to F off you should have read the fine print. He surely will manipulate the situation to make the most profit possible and pray on the consumer do not buy anything from this company

Spoke to Larry at length about a 1914 motor and transmission. He is very knowledgeable and I could hear the pride of ownership in his voice. I had read every review I could find. After researching the negative comments, I found quite a few were also engine builders. "Competitors"
