There were so many improvements to the Scottsdale Civic Center! It took me a few minutes to recognize the area, and I worked in the hotel years ago! What was previously an angled concrete area with fountains is now a large grassy area settled like an amphitheater with a splash pad and playground. There is plenty of seating throughout the grounds, sling with sculptures, murals, and fountains. I can imagine the concerts and public gatherings gmhsppenjbg in the area, and local families enjoying the playground and splash pad.

The old version of the civic center was a strong 5 stars, probably the best park I have ever visited. After the renovations and "improvements", it is down at 3 or 3.5 stars. I grew up in this park. On the weekends my parents would pile us 5 kiddos into the large van and bring us to the park to listen to music. My older brother and I would buy a pack of mini playing cards and dice at the close by Mexican Imports store and find a hidden spot to pretend to know how to play poker and craps. "Come on lucky 7's" you could hear us yelling. There were endless fountains, a lily pad and minnow filled pond, ducks, and expansive gardens with snapdragon flowers. The original developers had the imagination of a child. The place defied space, time, and reality. A mere few blocks of park seemed endless with all of its hidden nooks and crannies. Huge shade trees to climb and nap under. Soft cool grass to roll around in. Fountains to toss a coin into (or collect coins if you were a little boy willing to gamble with the Gods over wish stealing). As I said, the place was magical. Then the "improvements" came. Grassy knolls became barren fields of crushed rock and cactus. The snapdragon gardens disappeared. The ducks left. The hidden spaces were taken away. The checkerboard playng area disappeared. The meandering red brick path and hills on the west end were removed, and straight flat concrete sidewalks were installed. The infinite park took on a finite feeling. I can't express how bummed I am about the loss of such a special place and the inability to share the spot with my three boys. Is the new park "bad"? No. There are still two grassy areas for concerts and some pretty trees, but it is nothing compared to how it used to be. I get the need to conserve water in the valley, but I thought that was the whole point of the park. An oasis of water, grass, shade, and magic for the whole community in a place where water was too scarce to create the same environment in each of their own backyards. I just hope the new park grows on me. Seriously though, who thought switching out grass and flowers for fields of, and containers filled with 4 inch pieces of crushed rock was a good idea? We have so many beautiful natural desert spots in the valley that this place should have stayed as the green oasis it was. Just my 2 cents.

I love this park they have great events here fun little displays and places to take pictures, they are constantly upgrading the grounds and the flower gardens are absolutely beautiful and well maintained. They have large grass play areas and it is surrounded by the museum the Performing Arts Center and many fun stores as well as Top Notch restaurants

So many things to do and see around here. Its also fun for walks, picnics and photoshoots. The library and Old town scottsdale (tourist trap) are all in walking distance and all parking is free. You can certainly spend the whole day here

This is such a great area just recently renovated. It's great to get out and enjoy the sun. I just went for Sun and Sounds the other day to enjoy the weather some live music and it was great. Being a lawn blanket or stadium seat and perch yourself on the grass with a picnic basket. The building has nice restrooms to access and there were places and food trucks near by where you can get food and beverages during the shows.

If I could give 3.5 I would do that, but it leans more 3 for me at the moment. I've been coming here for years and it's definitely a nice park. There is ample amount of green space and the public art pieces are nice. I'm conflicted about the new re-model as I feel like what was promised vs. what was delivered is quite the let down. Specifically, the plans called for additional shade over areas where grass was removed and the preservation of the fountain area by the saguaro hotel is a far cry from the peaceful oasis it once was. I do appreciate the new event spaces and think that is a great add, but I do wish they had kept more of the original character of the park. I hope that once the plants in the rock areas have a chance to flourish the space feels more natural, but until that happens, the space is a bit of a disappointment for me.

They sure have done a nice job with this as a public Civic Center space. The big grassy area in the middle for a Concerts is very nice and there is plenty of benches and other interesting things to see not to mention the library at the very nice historical museum. Definitely worth a visit when visiting downtown Scottsdale. Besides, it's free; how about that!
