I can't believe I haven't left a review for Dr. Aguirre and Salt River Vets yet...Dr. Aguirre saved our dog Max years ago, with emergency surgery for bladder stones that were creating a blockage, while he was at another specialty clinic. We were so grateful and thankful for his excellent care of Max. Years later, when Max was diagnosed and in treatment for IMHA, we found out that Dr. Aguirre had opened his own specialist clinic, we transferred Max's care to him, and again, Dr. Aguirre was amazing. Max is no longer with us, but I would NOT HESITATE to bring any of our animals to him/his clinic should we have the need to again.

My cat Guillaume developed numerous health issues and was referred to Salt River by my vet in Flagstaff. Dr Rose provided exemplary care and diagnosed him with IBD after performing an endoscopic biopsy. She truly cares and listens to her clients. I have always sought the best for my beloved cat as a pet parent and have high standards due to my MS in Animal Science. Salt River and Dr Rose exceeded my expectations and I am so happy to have my cat healthy again.

Salt River Vet Specialists is the Mayo Clinic for pets.
Yes, there is some levity in my opening line for this review, but they went way, way above and beyond for my beloved cat Juniper and I, and I am so grateful.
Some backstory- I consider myself to be a generally independent person. Bad things have come my way, as they do to many folks, and I've become skilled at weathering the storms, often with the help of my friends or with just some good ole fashioned stubbornness. So when in December 2023 and I was told I might have cancer, it was bad news but it was another thing I could work through.
However...as I was dealing with surgeries and a possible cancer diagnosis, I saw my best baby Juniper was losing weight. Her normal (primary care?) vet believed she had lymphoma, and told me she may not be around very much longer.
I was beyond devastated. All those times I got bad news myself, I felt like I could fight my own battles and deal with it...but not this time. I felt so helpless. I had no way to help her. All the times I'd gone through hard times Juniper been right with me, making hard days so much easier; but I felt like in her time of need, I couldn't help her.
When I took her to Salt River Vet, I was hoping for a miracle for her. In a way, I did kinda get that. Every member of staff I spoke to was genuinely so caring, and I felt like they were fighting for her just as hard as i was.
I am beyond grateful for Dr. Rose. It was immediately clear to me that she is very knowledgeable, and is incredibly skilled at lending her understanding to others. From our first visit, I felt much more well informed about Juniper's illness and what our next steps forward would be for her.
D. Rose was able to determine Juniper did not have lymphoma, but rather a pretty nasty food sensitivity/IBD. She and the other folks at Salt River Vet gave me all the resources I needed to get Juni back on the mend. They have been beyond caring and responsive, and I felt like they were on my team the whole time. In fact, I felt like the vet clinic provided much better support to my cat and I than I have ever received from my own doctors!
Juniper is bouncing back now, as am I, as I also was given a diagnosis of no cancer. These past few months have certainly been tough, but I have immense gratitude for Dr. Rose and Salt River Vet for being the people who came through for Juniper and me in our time of need.

I saw Dr. Shafer for a gallbladder surgical consult after MU recommended surgery but my internist here recommended waiting. If I could give no stars I would. She was just so extremely inappropriate and uncaring. She wanted to lecture me about how we have been choosing doctors and never once even asked about my dog's pain. When the doctor cares more about the customer's choice of doctors than they care about the patient, there is something deeply wrong here. I explained to her that sticking to one doctor isn't always simple. I told her that we've recently moved, had a change of dog ownership within our family, had disagreements between our primary care doc and internist, so we got a second opinion, etc. Dr Shafer just cared about scolding and placing blame in the most absurdly patronizing and inaccurate way possible. She actually argued back when I told her it wasn't that simple, and she said "no but you can choose who your doctor is", as if to really highlight that it was my fault (even when the dog wasn't mine and was my family member's) that we've switched doctors (which hasn't even been a valid problem). Arguing with Dr Shafer and justifying our decision to get a second opinion on one occasion, explaining that we had to switch docs bc we moved, etc is not even remotely close to an appropriate way to spend a $300 consult with a surgeon, and it's hard not to feel ripped off after this. Plus, she's just wrong. Our neurologist wanted us to do a 1.5 Tesla MRI, and we switched neurologists to get our dog a 3 Tesla MRI. This was of course better for our dog. Staying with one doc is not always best for our dog, it truly is not that simple, and arguing with a doctor about this during what was SUPPOSED to be a surgical consult is wildly inappropriate. Again, Dr. Shafer never even asked about my dog's pain. This is horrible and inexcusable on several levels 1.) gallbladder problems are widely known to be possibly painful to extremely painful conditions in dogs and humans, 2.) My dog has struggled with gallbladder issues for months and that should prompt any decent doc to ask about pain, 3.) I reported to the tech that my dog is showing signs of having a lot of pain, and 4.) when I made the appt I told them my dog wakes up in the middle of night in quite a bit of pain/discomfort and we are not sleeping through the nights. On top of this surgeon not helping or even caring about the dog's pain, they'll test how you can deal with their doctor's absurdly offensive and inappropriate behavior. Unfortunately, I do not recommend the surgical department at Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists. She is simply not a serious doctor when she'd rather discuss how you choose your doctors than discuss your dog's pain.

After multiple different vets, blood panels, ultrasounds and surgery, we were told to go to an internal specialist and found ourselves at Salt River Cet with Dr Auguirre. Our beloved 5 year old super mix, Bronson, was diagnosed with chronic active hepatitis. He was in rough shape. A diagnosis like that has a prognosis of 3, maybe 5 years. Dr Auguirre knew exactly what to do and with his incredible knowledge, kind bedside manner and excellent team, Bronson is now 10 1/2 years and living his best life. Thank you for saving our boy and giving us even more time with the world's most special boy

I have NEVER been so frustrated with a vet before. They are the absolute WORST to get in contact with and trying to schedule. I submitted a stupid form online only to not receive a call back for DAYS. I called three times in one day to get NO CALL BACK. I called and left voicemails BEGGING for them to text me or email me so we can plan something for my dog to get in since my primary vet recommended them. Now they finally texted yesterday but have not ANSWERED any of my text or calls and continue to call at arbitrary times leaving condensing voicemails about "it's hard to schedule through text" when my question is clear. DO YOU HAVE APPOINTMENT IF SO WHEN. So so so rude. So unprofessional. Do not recommend. Even MY VET tried contacting them and said to just go elsewhere now. I wanted to go here. They obviously didn't want my fur baby or I here.

Peace of mind is what you'll find at Salt River Veterinary Specialists Dr. Aguirre is one of a kind in the best way possible and I am beyond grateful for the exemplary care he provided not just to my 11 year old golden doodle but to me as well! Thank you! I was fortunate to meet Dr. Glick recently and Clyde and I both love her! She is so sweet, kind, considerate, attentive and she made us feel at ease the entire time we were with her. She was knowledgeable and communicated so well with consideration, compassion, and empathy. Thank you! I'm so impressed every time we come in! Everyone up at the front is always so nice. Jamie was our technician this time and she was very upbeat and positive while listening and observing Clyde. If you want the highest quality care for your pets with honest people then this is it! TYSM SRVS! Love, Bonnie & Clyde

Our primary vet referred us to Dr. Aguirre because our Zymba had kidney and bladder stones. Everyone was so kind and Dr. Aguirre talked us through everything. After our first visit we had a plan to do surgery and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Our boy is back to his old self and thriving. Thank you Salt River Veterinary Specialists!!

Salt River Vet is the BEST! We were referred to Dr. Aguirre by our regular vet. Our Cairn Terrier Duke was extremely sick and the standard lab testing wasn’t giving us any answers.Dr. Aguirre literally saved Duke’s life!! After he did the ultrasound he knew exactly what the issue was and started treating him immediately. I brought in a very sick dog that morning and they gave me a whole different dog back that afternoon! He had been chilly due to his condition and they were nice enough to put his sweater back on after his procedure. Those small acts of kindness really mean a lot. I know every situation is different and we got lucky with Duke’s condition being a very treatable one, but after months of watching our dog decline and having no answers, I will forever be grateful to Dr. Aguirre and Salt River Vet for saving my little buddy. Pic is of a healthy Duke enjoying the holidays after Dr. Aguirre saved him! We’ve also seen Dr. Shaver and had great experiences with her too. Both Dr. Aguirre and Dr. Shaver are very practical and pragmatic. They take the time to thoroughly explain the condition and all of the options and answer all of my questions. The staff is friendly, the office is nice and the vets are top notch. I recommend Salt River Vet to every pet owner I know!

Dr. Rose is a kind, empathetic and intelligent specialist. My cat was very ill and we were struggling to get a diagnosis. Not only did she find a diagnosis quickly but worked with us to find the best option for our sweet cat. The best decision was to put our Lazlo down. Dr. Rose understood that both my husband and I are in healthcare and could only come back at 7 pm after work (the vet clinic closes at 5 pm). Dr. Rose was sweet enough and volunteered to stay so we could give our cat a peaceful and loving goodbye. We are so grateful to Dr. Rose for all she did for us. I will be sending all my pets to Dr. Rose because she is truly giving the best care.

$5856.86 spent here with Ultrasounds 4/20/23 and testing and wound up treating my dog for an issue to adreanal gland when he had 4 tumors which were cancerous and they never told us THEY WERE EVEN THEIR A SPOT ON THE LIVER is all . They kept ripping me off with unnecessary testing when they knew he was going to die. /when I CALLED that he was in distress they said call your primary vet. I took him to emergency and was told of the tumor mass detected on his liver, ULTRASOUND DONE and was told he was in bad shape and tumor was pressing on his gallblader and would only suffer.BOTTOM LINE DON'T TAKE THEIR WORD GET A SECOND OPINION RIGHT AWAY, if you love your pet they use this to drain your wallet and then some.
