Absolutely awful. Line basically out the door due to supposed computer outage affecting both Payless and Avis. I know these kinds of things happen but it is frustrating to stand there seeing no sense of urgency behind the counters to get people to their cars, especially late in the evening. The experience also helps you appreciate the companies that offer online checkin (I usually rent from Hertz and Enterprise here but both were booked)

Never again. Short staffed and absurdly expensive. That pretty well goes for all car rental agency’s these days. But this one got me riled up. Aside from the high rates. And BTW there were hundreds of cars in the lot and it was late so saying the didn’t have enough cars was nonsense. But what really got me upset was the woman that checked me in started making comments about politics particularly about California’s. I found it very uncomfortable and unprofessional. And her hard sell to buy there insurance which is so overpriced it costs half the price of the actual car rental. I got so irritated with her I raised my voice telling her I didn’t want the insurance. Even then she made a comment how she would pay for it if it were her. I left feeling paranoid after the encounter. Never again Payless. Talk to your staff and tell them to keep their political opinions to themselves. And STOP PRICE GOUGING!!

So glad to have rented my Chrysler mini-van here. The customer service agent was very friendly and courteous. The in and out process was streamline and flawless. And best of all, I did not have to wait that long in line!

Me and my friend had a terrible experience with Payless Car Rental. They charged us an extra $200 on credit card, claiming we returned the car early. After multiple attempts to contact customer service, we received a document weeks later with an incorrect return date. The car was returned ON time, and they have no proof otherwise so they fabricated the document weeks after rental. Despite trying to solve this situation, they offered a 50% discount on the unjust fee, which we refused. In the end, they only refunded around 45% (this was so awkward, why and based on what?) of the wrongful charge for a situation THEY fabricated. I strongly advise against using Payless; they are dishonest and untrustworthy. The worst car company I used so far. We read so many bad opinions similar to ours: they charge extra charges for things they make up themselves. Customer service is so unprofessional and well trained how to make people stupid.
My favorite part is when we asked to send a document with our signature and consent to charge an additional fee for returning the car earlier, Ms. Jessica form customer service listed the dashes MANUALLY in the email, in case anyone doesn't know - Payless apparently considers it a valid document: writing out the details of the charges from the dashes with the note: the rest is tax and fees.

I am at Payless Car Rental Phoenix Airport. There is a line of 10 people with one person working the counter. I asked a customer who left how long they have been waiting and they told me 3 hours. I walked over to Avis where there was no one in line and they said they could not help even though they are partner companies. I spoke to the manager at Avis Don B. And he tokd me he could not send anyone over to help. Can someone please tell me how this is customer centric??? I recorded the incident to provide proof.
10/18/24 This is an update to my previous review. I am pleased to say that since my last post they have made huge changes. You can now stand in the Avis line and they will walk with you over to the Payless line and take care of you. I must say the experience is much much better. Thank you for listening to my concerns and addressing them!!

The car we were given had 56k miles on it, many dings and scratches, the engine rattled and on two days, the air conditioning didn't work. They had one person at the desk and it took 25 minutes to get my car and I had all the paperwork in order when I arrived.

Just don't do it. it's cheap for a reason. I waited 2 hrs in a line of 6 ppl. this place seems to be set up specifically to piss people off and theure really good at it

The other reviews are right, be prepared to wait a couple hours in line only to be told your reservation is no longer available even though you booked 3 months in advance!!!

Absolute garbage company. I will never rent from them again.
We waited well over an hour to pick up the car. Agents were spending almost 20 minutes with each customer.
The low fee online hides all the fees you get charged at the airport, which, alone, almost double the fee.
I was upsold to pre-pay for a tank of gas (the agent said otherwise I'd pay $5.99/ga nearby and have to show a receipt that I filled up).
I was not given a receipt after my long wait at the counter (this should have been a red flag). Well, after returning the car empty (because I pre-paid, right?) I was charged $9.99 per gallon. Cool.
Finally, I was charged $450 for an excessively dirty car when it was returned with a perfectly normal level of dirt. The agent I spoke to while disputing the charge claimed that returning the car clean and vacuumed was in the terms of use (It is not). When I asked to see photos of the inside of the car, I was sent very low-quality and grainy images that were taken the day after I returned the vehicle. From what I could tell, they also indicated a perfectly reasonable amount of dirt on the floor mats.
This is a terrible company with predatory practices.

Standing in a massive line right now (all other companies have no line) at Phoenix Airport, been 1.5 hours and watching 1 guy working and the other 2 staring at a computer. Manager came out and yelled an apology that they had issues this morning but it’s better now… it’s not, it’s worse…. He didn’t help anyone and went back behind counter to offices. NEVER AGAIN
