Funny enough, I don't feel preferred. I feel Deferred. National had this figured out in 2005.

The staff were very nice and courteous but the vehicle selection was quite limited as we couldn’t find a car that could fit two suitcases in the trunk! We ended up taking an EV which was great to drive but a pain to charge as hotels in Sedona and Payson have very slow chargers which meant constantly having to plug in for long periods of time to get a full charge. I can see why rental companies are dumping their EVs as the charging infrastructure is just not there yet for these cars. Also, Avis will tell you what they charge per gallon at the counter if you don’t fill it up but not what they charge for an EV if you don’t bring it back fully charged.

I would NOT recommend Avis at the Phoenix Int Airport, My list and Horrible Experiences are too long to list, Beware, you will not receive Vehicle you requested / pd for / you will have issues with check engine lights & multiple other vehicle issues and will need to swap and or return later. Do NOT rent at the Phoenix Int Airport. Rented twice in 6 weeks / 1st mid January check engine light / low tire pressure / less than 3/4 tank of gas - cost me over hour to work out another vehicle - 2nd time - was a lot worse and it took me 2 days to get help along with ruining 2 days for 6 others. I was led to sent to other locations only to sent away - This vehicle was not usable - Too long to list all the issues!

AVIS at PHX sky harbor is a joke. 2 hour wait to pick up a car in the PREFERRED lane. Then a runaround with finding a car and then a switch to another car parked in the boonies. No “We are sorry” or explanation. On check in app wouldn't work and no one around to help. If you have a choice use a different rental car company at phx.

It took 40 minutes to get the car; I was originally quoted a price of $309 when I booked the rental, then had an additional fee of $130 dollars at the counter when I got the keys and now the receipt for my rental came out to over $500, $200 more than I initially thought it was going to cost me for a two day rental. On top of that the car we received had a broken cruise control, the bluetooth would not connect, and the exhaust was broken making a loud noise during driving at any speed. To summarize, I was grossly over charged with hidden fees, for a sub quality vehicle and slow service.

You're better off walking. Car broke down in the middle of nowhere and Avis refused to help. After hours on hold in below-freezing temperatures with a car that couldn't stay warm, Avis finally relented and said they would send a tow truck. The tow truck finally arrived 14 hours after first contacting Avis, and in the meantime made no attempt to get us to safety. Took another 24 hours for a replacement vehicle to be arranged. One of the worst experiences with a company in my life and one I would caution everyone to avoid at all costs.

Horrible experience. Our rental car had a mechanical failure with the door which made it unable to close and drive. We spent 4 hours on the phone with them before they would send a tow truck. We were told it would take 3 additional hours for the tow truck to arrive. After 2 hours of waiting the tow truck on the way had a flat tire and they sent a new one which added an additional 3 hours. So total it took over 10 hours for a tow truck. We were informed we must wait with the car the entire time. We had two toddlers and no way to keep them warm. The weather put the children at risk with no way to shut the door to keep the wind out. Avis advised us to wait with the car, with the power on and no way to shut the door allowing exhaust fumes to fill the car. Avis repeatedly showed no concern for the danger of the situation. After the tow truck appeared, we were promised a car to be driven to us which never happened. When we called back about the car they said they fulfilled our contract and would not send us a new car. We are currently stranded at our location.

Our original rental car reserved was not upgraded like the program said it was supposed to do. We got a minivan and the customer service rep at the counter said “You’re lucky you’re getting this car.” Fast forward 24 hours and we weren’t so lucky. We get to the Grand Canyon around 8:30 am and the driver side rear door won’t close. We call roadside assistance and began that process. We had the absolute worst human being I’ve ever spoken to called Leon on 3/11/2024 around 9-11:30 am. He was demeaning to my wife because she was a female. He gave us three solutions. First drive the car back to our rental agency at Phoenix airport with the door open and he could see if they had another car. Second get an Uber back to the hotel and wait to get the car back to the hotel from a tow truck. THERE ARE NOT ANY AVAILABLE UBERS IN THE GRAND CANYON! Then he told us we were responsible for the cost of the tow because we broke the door and that’s why he couldn’t help us to get a new car to pick us up. He then said he called Neal at the flagstaff Avis and confirmed with Neal there were no cars available. We called Avis in flagstaff and they said they had not received any call what so ever and they had cars on the lots but they couldn’t dispatch one until roadside assistance sent a request. We called him out on his blatant lie and he backtracked and made it clear he was going to hold us accountable for the damage. He was very “friendly” to remind us he gave us an Uber credit for one ride but someone would have to stay with the car but he couldn’t comp us two rides back to our hotel. The last option was to keep our kids, who are 4 and 1 years old, in the car with everyone and wait until the tow truck arrives, don’t forget after 2 hours and thirty minutes of being on the phone with him he still had not dispatched the first tow truck. He offered the solution to keep the car on to keep warm….. We were guided by a trusted rental car agency’s support specialist to turn on the car and sit there with a door open to allow car exhaust fumes flow into the car? All of this was to wait for the tow truck because if we left the car unattended we would be charged and left liable. The temperatures were low enough to cause hypothermia, and the he inadvertently said that Avis valued the chrystler Pacifica more than my wife, two kids, and two friends lives. He then said he gave my wife viable options to get us out of the Grand Canyon and she didn’t want to accept any of these. He lied. I had to talk to him and bring into the light that his options required us to stay in a car while the temperatures were nearing freezing in the next few hours and couldn’t leave the car. Then brought to light how the car door wouldn’t close so we couldn’t turn on the car. This was a 2 hour phone call at this point and he never dispatched a tow truck. He was enjoying hearing us struggle to find a solution and quite frankly was just simply being a terrible human being. He then tried to tell us the cars door malfunctions were our fault over the phone? So your roadside assistance call center associate is remote mechanic and can just deem fault? We called roadside assistance and talked to Leon and he drug out an assistance call for 3 hours and never ordered us a tow truck. We had to go through an entire different organization to get an Avis approved tow truck sent to us. The first tow truck popped a tire on its way. The second one called and no showed. The third tow truck finally showed up at 9 pm.

Do not rent, in my opinion, from Avis at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Staff not helpful picking up or retuning. Car was in bad shape and dirty. Picked car up after 3:00 A.M. and rental office was packed so no chance to get different car as staff was moving slower than a ‘72 Pinto.

I had a really bad experience here. The rental car itself was fine. But a month after I dropped the car off at the airport Avis (this location), I got a notice of a $600 charge on my credit card for damage to the windshield. I had to spend a long time going back and forth with Avis to prove that I didn't do the damage. It was absurd. Avis agreed to return the funds, and refunded the charge on my credit card, but, because I am Canadian, I then had to deal with currency conversion fees that left me about $40 short after the funds were charged and refunded. So then I had to spend a bunch of time working with Visa to get the $40 in currency fees refunded. And all because Avis tried to charge me for damage I didn't do. Not sure if I will rent from Avis again.

Typically wouldn’t leave a review like this but the young lady that checked us out at Avis PHX was a fantastic representative of this company. Funny, nice and helpful. A unicorn in today’s customer’s service.

Charged me for gas when returned car completely full. Now I have to spend days working with Avis to fix it when the attendant couldn’t spend 30 seconds getting it correct.

Avis car rental was a 5-star experience from selecting a car, finding the car upon our arrival, and ease of returning the car. Our convertible was perfect for tailgating at a few spring training games. We will definitely rent again.
