Best shelter in the Phoenix area! I have adopted 3 wonderful kitties from here and it will always be my first choice. The staff takes time to interact with the animals on a daily basis. They provide you with any information they have on the animals- even if it's the not so great stuff we don't wanna hear. Just an awesome place! I recommend it to anyone mentioning they are interested in getting a furry friend. I highly recommend you check them out too! If nothing else support them by donating or ordering from their Amazon Wish List! You'll be glad you did.

We had a terrible experience at AAWL and do not feel at all comfortable recommending them to others. We were bringing in a few kittens for intake that we had rescued after they were dumped, when we saw a HUGE dog at the front desk named Jolly. She was 60+ pounds and a Rottweiler looking mix and was up there for advertising purposes. I was hopeful that they had enough common sense to have a docile dog there in the front since people are in and out of the building bringing in animals. That was NOT the case with this dog. We were sitting in the lobby waiting for intake when one of their previous adopters walked in returning a German Shepherd. The GS was so well behaved and walked in ignoring people and animals around him. Jolly immediate starts barking uncontrollably (the room is very open so the barks were booming loudly and echoing, which TERRIFIED our kittens), then she began growling and lunging in an attempt to get to the other dog. The gal at the front could barely contain her. The adopters had to rush their dog to the gift shop to meet with an employee there for safety to be far away from Jolly. Not only were our kittens completely shaken up by the experience, but I was very uncomfortable and nervous around that dog after witnessing that. I wanted to be FAR away from that dog. A few minutes later they took us back with our kittens, and can you guess how they did? Not so good. The staff said they were very scared and wanting to stay in the back of the kennel… uh, well yeah, you think? They just had to be in the same room with a large, aggressive dog who was ready to attack. We even told the girl walking us back about the interraction and how bad that was to experience for us humans and the cats, and she acknowledged the screw up and that they probably didn’t pick the best dog to be up front. We ended up taking the super scared ones home. We have never used AAWL before that day and will never recommend anyone we know to use them. How irresponsible and negligent to have a dog like that where the general public are walking in and where animals are coming in throughout the day for intakes. That dog is a liability, and very terrifying to other animals and people. I am confident had that situation not happened that day, the kittens would have done so much better. Very disappointed in this facility. -Maria

Adopted our cat Phoenix from there, he is a sweetie. We attempted to get another cat and they offered a “sleepover” for a week since sometimes cat introductions don’t go well which was the case for this one. Was so nice to have the option of bringing them back safely incase it didn’t work out.

I adopted a kitten from here and I love him so much, however he had ringworm when I adopted him (I did not know at the time of course) and brought him home and he spread it to my other cat and I’ve had to spend over $1000 in vet visits, medications, and tests :( when I told AAWL about this they said “sorry to hear!”. They should do more frequent ring testing on their shelter kittens.

I had three adorable little kittens show up in my front yard. Me and my family had waited for mom to show up but after a few days she was a no show. We even put food, treats and water out for them. Having family members who have volunteered and worked with animals, we followed the instructions to not ‘kittennap’ the three kittens. We waited and waited for mom. Unfortunately, she did not return. So we took them, bathed them, fed them and gave them love. Unfortunately, we could not keep them. Due to personal reasons and financial reasons. We looked around to see if local shelters could take them. We came across this shelter and within a timely manner had an appointment to surrender them. The communication was through email and Arleth was amazing! She was professional, friendly and gave me guidance on what to expect for the appointment! When I arrived for the appointment, the front desk girl had informed me that my appointment was not until 2pm but within my email we set the appointment time to 12pm! I was confused and it was a 45 minute drive for me. So I told her I would wait. Within ten minutes I was seen and the appointment took place. I guess there was some confusion. Not too sure what had happened. The staff was friendly! They took the kittens in to be examined and found they were healthy and able to be taken into the shelter. I was able to make this little photo flyer to collect donations from immediate family members to contribute when we surrendered the kittens. I encourage you all to donate what you can to this shelter! I know me and my family will donate and support this shelter as much as we can!

If you are going to add a fur family member to your home-- get them from here. No kill shelter. They love and care for their furry friends. My dog came from here a year ago. My granddog came from here 8 yrs ago. Best dogs ever. Truly. Love these dogs. And I just started volunteering there sunday. Great humane loving place.

I think it was about 2 months ago when we decided to try their “give me a break program”, it is essentially a program where you can foster dog for 2-3 days.
Based on information we read off their website we reached there almost 2 hours prior to the said time because we wanted to have a look at the dogs and spend some time there to be prepared.
In those 2 hours we did tell the reception person and the volunteer clearly that we are doing it for the first time. My husband had volunteered there few times and we said that too.
After 3+ hours of filling out the forms, deciding our dog buddy, getting the food, fitting the giant crate into our car when we were literally about to leave with the dog, the volunteer person just comes and refuses us to take the dog, saying their policy doesn’t allow that.
I understand someone being protective of the dogs but at the stake of someone’s precious time? It was scorching heat and to wait for 3+ hours just to be refused is disappointing.

We had someone bring 2 dogs with issues to board and never returned. After 3 months of training feeding solving food aggression and socialization. It was to the point fostering for free was to much . The fourth month they took oliver and Lila and the 2 girls soothed my anxiety .. That they were in good hands and were gonna make great pets. Thank you .

The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable..we adopted her because my husband and I wanted a dog we wanted one for emotional support. she is beautiful. The spayed/ neutered her, has had the shots and a chip in her too.

I adopted my sweet special needs girl from AAWL a few months ago and couldn’t be happier. She was born with a birth defect resulting in her eyelids not being fully formed, and underwent surgery prior to arriving at AAWL. After seeing her and a few others online I went in to visit and immediately fell in love with her. The staff was EXTREMELY kind and helpful. They took extra steps to ensure she went to a good home that had done their research and knew what to expect medically. In addition, I had a LOT of questions about her records and advice before I moved forward. Every individual I spoke with was really great and the entire adoption process went off without a hitch.
I have already recommended AAWL to multiple people, and will continue to do so to anyone that will listen. Overall fantastic experience and I’m so thankful AAWL helped us find each other!!??
