When I needed a cut & foils this year, I reached out to two salons & went with the one that answered first: Zulu. I should have waited for the second place.
I advised I wanted a stylist experienced with curly hair. I was provided two options and told they’re both “great” with curly hair. That should have been my 1st clue: not everyone is “great” with curly hair.
When I arrived at the appointment, I showed the stylist a photo (with explanation on how the cut is achieved) and advised her that I wanted bangs like the one in the photo.
The stylist barely glanced at the photo, did not take time to read what was written about the cut or discuss it with me. That should have been my 2nd clue.
When initially making the first cut of my bangs, the stylist asked how thick or thin I wanted them. I thought this was odd as she should have been referring to the picture. That should have been my 3rd clue.
At no time during the cut did the stylist check that both sides of the cut were even.
Half way through the cut, I just resigned myself to not getting the cut in the photo I showed her.
Once I got home and spent a week trying to work with the cut, I realized: 1) The bangs were not cut evenly at the root & are mixed in with the longer hair; 2) The length was not even on both sides, nor were the “layers” that were cut; 3) The cut resulted in a triangle above my shoulders and longer sections just hanging beneath that.
I sent an email to Management: 1) explaining the above; 2) attaching 9 photos 3) advising that I had been referred by a long-time client of theirs; and 4) advising that I had to drive from central Alberta for the appointment (3 hours + gas + time spent in salon + cost of the cut).
Management responded and said they would re-do/correct the cut at my convenience.
I advised (1) I’m now gun-shy about the salon (2) it was difficult enough for me to schedule that appointment (3) I've already spent the time (3 hrs) & money to drive there and I'm not willing to do so again (4) any corrective measures at this point will make my hair too short.
3 BUSINESS DAYS, no response. I followed up with Management & asked what other compensation they could offer.
They responded that it’s “hard to figure what an appropriate amount of compensation” [NOT THAT THEY COULDN’T REFUND THE MONEY] and again offered a complimentary cut once my hair has grown, but this time said they would provide some styling product “in the meantime”.
I advised that they were now expecting me to drive 3 hours + the cost of gas 2X instead of 1X. I advised at this stage I just wanted a refund.
Again, 3 BUSINESS DAYS, NO RESPONSE. I had to follow up again.
This time their curt response stated I got a colour which there were no complaints about, so they wouldn’t provide a refund.
I said fine, don’t refund the cost of the colour, just refund the cost of the cut and the tip.
This time the less than professional response included: “as you are unwilling to let [us] see the hair in person, we will not be issuing a refund, as per our company policy”.
It should be noted that NO POLICIES are stated on their website nor was this policy made clear at any point.
Management twisted my words & basically accused me of lying and trying to "scam" them.
I clarified this unprofessional response from Management. I am NOT UNWILLING to let them see the haircut in person. I made it very clear in EVERY EMAIL that I am UNABLE to drive 3 HOURS plus the cost of gas. Good management realizes that are “exceptions” to policies.
Zulu Hair is not concerned about:
- Representing their skills correctly;
- What a customer wants;
- The time a customer has to spend TO GET to their salon or time IN the salon
- The cost a customer incurs or how hard their customers work for the money
- Keeping a referral customer happy

We have been on a hunt for a hair stylist that will have patience and understanding for my SN daughter and are very pleased with Dawn. She did a wonderful job of a not so easy colour and cut and somehow managed to get the style just as my daughter wanted it, even though I had no clue what she was trying to explain. We have found the gal we were looking for. ?

I had the best experience with Hayley this past week. I haven't had my hair done in a couple years, and it was a blast - and affordable. With the rising prices of everything, it is hard to justify spending so much money on yourself, and Zulu still offers the best experience and competitive prices. I had my hair colored, cut, and styled for about $200 (including 15% tip), which I think is great considering I do have very long hair. I will definitely go back to Zulu, and Hayley.Thanks for the great hair, coffee, and conversation!Services: Hairstyling
