Today I went in and asked if the copepods were live and the only answer I got was I never had a problem .Upon getting them removing the lid and letting them come to room temp zero movement.Sold me dead stock … the person who sold me this product was clearly bothered by my questions, like she was too busy to provide time or discussion .Calling another store after the fact the things to look for were explained to me clearly. In short I kinda feel like they lost my business here . I don’t get into town that often and now I’m doing a water change for throwing in dead copepods into my tank .Also they must know what they were doing the whole “ I’ve never had a problem “ is nonsense. Burn me over 20 bucks and it’s the last money you’ll ever get from me .

Our first visit was a couple of months ago, and we have been back twice since! What I really appreciate is the knowledge of the staff, especially in the fish room. I was not aware of cycling a tank (we are very new) and the manager took the time to explain how to do it and why. He also said, as we had just set up the tank, that they would not sell us fish yet as the tank needed to complete the cycle. We did buy three plants and they are doing fantastic! My only complaint is that if you are heading there on a weekend, it will be busy and you will have to wait for help. If that is not for you, head over on a weekday.

Unfortunately, I hate to write this review. But we Purchased a dotty back salt water fish along with a box fish that was connected too other tanks @ big Al's, found out they had internal parasites & ick. Now we are dealing with trying to heal our Aquarium because the parasites have spread. Pretty disappointed.

This is a great place to shop for fish and pet supplies. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and real assets, especially to the people who are new to having fish. Awesome place to go.

Most of the time I’ve never had an issue. They are quite expensive, but they have a good selection. I was in over the weekend and spent $200. After about 24 hours, one of the fish died. I called in to ask if there was a warranty. After getting some information I was told I would not qualify because I didn’t keep the order sheet, even though I had the receipt, and that it was acclimated to their specifications. Never once have I ever been told that the fish need to be acclimated precisely to their conditions, or that the order sheet is needed as well as till receipt. Super shady in my opinion. After a day they won’t honour their sales, even with documentation and without their staff giving properly instructions. Not worth the heavy prices, in my opinion

Courtney is Fantastic! And so helpful and joyful! As an aquarium store it really means a lot to people when the employees have such passion and care like we do for our fish and aquariums! Thankyou Courtney for lighting up the entire atmosphere of the store. And being so knowledgeable and helpful.A truly above and beyond Employee!

The staff are very knowledgeable, the electronics prices are really good, and the freshwater fish selection is excellent. That said, the saltwater fish selection isn’t what it used to be and their live animal prices are often quite a bit more expensive than other aquarium fish stores. Overall however, I’d definitely recommend it.

I love this place! I don't even own a fish tank yet, but the creatures here are SO cool and the staff are VERY kind and VERY knowledgeable. I enjoy stopping here just to enjoy the fish.

I absolutely love coming here for all my fish needs. The staff are very educated on aquariums and aquatic pets and I trust that the information I receive from here is accurate and professional. My only advice is to not come on weekends if you are doing anything more than shopping and need advice/information. I normally visit on weekday evenings where it is slowest and I am able to be assisted. When I went once on the weekend, the store was incredibly packed and I ended up waiting 40 minutes to be helped. I understand that weekends are very busy so this incident does not affect my rating of the store - I know just how amazing this place can be.The store is well organised and easy to navigate. There are many products suited to each person's needs and level with aquariums and there is a large variety of both freshwater and saltwater fish. Staff are friendly and made sure I left confident in what I was doing.

Lady at cash said she didn't know anything about fish and to ask someone in the fish section when asked how fast goldfish grow, I thought it was a simple question. Spent 10min wandering the fish area until just leaving.Lesson here is don't go on the weekends because they don't staff enough for how busy it is.Good selection, fine prices, poor service.

Okay, let's see. I've been to Big Al's a few times. Customer service used to be really great but there seems to be a shift. The young staff especially seem to spend more time flirting with one another then being there to help customers. Then older staff take over but seem grumpy and mislabel prices for fish --- then become argumentative and impatient when you let them know. Then back to young staff who try to correct the price but don't know how to do basic math. Sad -- they didn't take the time to learn how to do math in school--- too busy on tik tok. Meanwhile another young rep unwilling to help at cash because she's been waiting to be cashed out by her manager... so she could have helped but chose not to and chose to continue to wait for her boss another 15 min instead in a pissy mood. Then called him out for being late. You know as older staff, I might become grumpy too having to work with young, clueless, rude people. Ever hear of not airing your grievences publically between staff especially in the service industry? It's just not a good look. Then, asked yet another young customer service rep, about the rays. She was straight up impatient too but informed me, just before walking away, that 2 out of 3 died in the tank. Large creatures confined in a tank that let's be honest is too small for them. Inwardly, I'm truly sad for creatures that had to spend their life imprisoned like that. I found one guy who was knowledgeable about pumps and was the best help. So thank you aquarium pump guy. One out of seven people that I interacted with was helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Thank goodness for that guy!Oh yes, and then 2 out of 3 fish that I purchased from them died. None of the fish that I purchased from other stores on the same day died. My tank is cycled and running appropriately. So, everyone, there are even better aquarium places in Edmonton who are owned by passionate, friendly, knowledgeable people. Go there instead! And support their businesses ... places like Aqua Market, The Planted Tank, Aquarium Central... and while there are more, those are good places to start. Support places that want your business and will treat you with respect.
