I have been shopping at Birks since 2013. Before their new location right now by Tiffany, before their old location by Nordstrom, just about when they were still close to where Lululemon is today. I've bought multiple Cartiers, Tudors, Earrings, and Wedding Rings all at this location alone. At other locations I've piled up a collection of fun toys from under the Birks umbrella including some Rolexes, more Tudors, an IWC, and a Vacheron (back when they had still distribution rights).
There's been a massive drop in service especially since they've changed to this location, I've noticed it ever since they've moved, but today was absolutely pathetic. J Vair, Calgary Jewellery, Brinkhaus, and the downtown Birks are a much better experience top to bottom.
I went in today to see if I could find something neat as a gift at about 10:15, just a little bit after they opened - this is not a busy time at all. Typically, staff at the door at a jewellery store greet guests and even ask if you are looking for something in particular or even a particular person. This happens at all the other jewellery stores I mentioned above. Here, you now only get a nod. I went through the Tudor and Longines section with literally 0 interaction with any staff, despite having a few of them walk right past me. The Rolex section is where I have the most issues with, and have had many issues with over the years, with only exactly one positive experience over four trips.
The fellow who was working at the Rolex station won't even get up out of his chair to greet anyone, he's too busy looking at used high mileage luxury cars on his Surface Pro to see what a guest is up to. If you ask him any questions, he will give you only one word answers. You'll get better service from the teenagers manning the Dairy Queen stand upstairs.
At another previous visit, I asked how they distribute any watches that they do get, just honestly being curious if it was about how much you've spent, or if you're already a Rolex customer or anything like that. I still remember her pointing at my watch and telling me "What you have there, is meaningless to us. We don't care if you've purchased Rolex before. You will just have to find out when we get watches in. The demand is impossible for us to meet." Unbelievable.
The only time I had a decent experience in the Rolex section was when I had my 1-year old with me. That's when the sales staff would even crack a smile and would ask if I had plans and what brought me in to Rolex that day, and even offered for me to try some items on without me asking. This experience seems a little more consistent with the other stores in Calgary, and all the ones I've visited across Europe and Asia.
Honestly, I'm just so tired and disappointed. Birks used to always cater to the customer to make sure every visit was memorable. They would always ask to clean up my wife's rings, try to show me what's new, and really try to make you feel warm and fuzzy in an attempt to sell you something. Now they don't even try.
Do better. Your downtown branch and all your competitors are superior options today.

She was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to ensure we were happy, even when we ended up with a different model than originally ordered. My wife and I have been working with Josh for a long time. He is always prompt at responding to inquiries. He makes us feel welcome every time we visit and always offers a variety of beverages to make our time at the store more comfortable and enjoyable. He over-delivers on all fronts whether it’d be during a point of sale or service. He is knowledgeable and you can tell he loves what he does. The renovation at Birks’ new location turned out beautifully. I would definitely recommend Josh and the store to anyone who is interested in fine jewelry or watches.

She walked through the process and was so incredibly detailed and patient with his questions and they ended up picking the most beautiful ring.
