The new mountain bike trails at Joe Wheeler are well designed - fast, curvy, rolling hills, family friendly and scenic. About 9 miles total. The Sunday lunch buffet was great too!

Rogersville, Alabama 35652Hiking Trails, Paddle Boat rentals,Very nice state park with lots of amenities and pleasant staff. Enjoyed the multiple trails, the swimming area and the paddle boat rentals. The park was a wide range of activities to keep a family or couple from leaving the area - fishing from the dock or the bank, hiking trails, swimming pool, restaurant, lodge, golf course, picnic areas, paddle boat rentals and boat dock storage, resale store, and much more. Very self contained. The Park itself was super clean and well maintained. Walking Paths were well marked and passable. The Biking Path was limited to mountain bikes because of the grade and obstacles - riding a street bike in the park can be a challenge with all the hills and upgrades. Lots of people were catching fish off the pier; and others were using the paddle boats. Very active park. The General Golf Course is also part of the park amenities and well worth a visit. Course is super nice, well maintained and affordable.Recommend a visit - whether a one day visit or spending the weekend in the lodge. Very enjoyable and peaceful get-away.Dog-friendliness: Lots of folks with pets hiking in the park.Picnic area: Ample pavilions, grills and outdoor areas for picnics.

We recently rented a cottage at Joe Wheeler State Park. The setting and views were lovely. The cottage had the potential to be very nice. Unfortunately it was quite dirty. We saw numerous roaches, the table top was disgusting- obviously either wiped with some odd type of cleaner -or worse, not wiped at all.. There were light bulbs out in the kitchen and entryway, and alas, one of the two overhead lights in the main room sputtered and died while we were there. Headlamps would have been very useful it was so dark in that cottage. After we registered we received a call from the desk saying that a chimney sweep would be coming in to clean the chimney the next day. Now mind you there are 10 cottages , 9 of which were empty while we were there. What would possess an innkeeper to try and pull such a ridiculous stunt. We said we would not allow anyone to come in and stir up dust and ashes while we were paying more than$200. a day, and all the other cottages were empty! Serious,y?! We love Alabama State Parks and have stayed in many, but Joe Wheeler is now off our list.

Campground and bike trails! I'm only reviewing the Campground and the bike trails because we haven't stayed at the lodge. The campground is very nice with a lot of spots having beautiful views of the water. Check the spot map because some spots have shade trees and some have no shade. Full hookups and everything seems to be maintained well. We love to ride the bike trails. Trails are pretty well maintained and are fairly easy enough for most riders. You will see deer if you come here. We see them every time and they are beautiful! It's overall just a beautiful park.

This is a beautiful park with fantastic cross country style mountain bike trails that are multi-use. The lake is beautiful. The golf course is a great value. The rangers are helpful. Most times I run or ride here I see more deer than people.

We started going to Joe Wheeler state park about 6 yrs ago with our collegiate fishing team and stayed in cabin #4. It was beautiful and had the best of flatware, linens, etc. And furnished like a 5 start hotel. I wrote the management there telling them how nice it was, but, at that time the dock had nails around the edge and my grandson damaged his boat extensively after he tied up to it.Since then we have gone back 3-4 times as we love the beautiful lake and get a room overlooking the pool. However, I noticed this time the lodge is in great need of an update as it just is not as nice and does not meet the standards for a $150 night hotel. Two of the fabric bottom chairs were stained excessively and I put a towel over each to sit in.The kitchen was so dark with two ceiling lights but obviously very low wattage bulbs I had to move the floor lamp from the bedroom to the kitchen. There was a minimum of flatware, there was only one SMALL TRASH CAN IN THE KITCHEN so that it overflowed and one small in the bathroom, which is expected, but most hotels have a large trash can in the kitchen, and there was NO TRASH CAN IN THE LARGE BEDROOM AREA. We are 85 yrs old and have difficult walking so making a trip to another room for a trash can was a big deal for us.The wall in the toilet area was all banged up and paint peeling back. And the vanity area had messy grout showing that looked like an amateur had done it. Both tacky and an eye sore. Also, the check out time was not posted anywhere in the room as most hotels have on the back of the door. I could not figure out how to use the phone as there was no directions on it so I dialed 0 thinking i would get the operator but I did not. Finally, I called the office on my cell phone having to look up the number. It just seemed this trip things were more difficult even calling the office to ask departure time.Even when I went to a neighboring town jewelry store, when I told her we were staying at the Lodge, she said "they really need to update that place". That they would not be going back until it was updated and we feel the same way. The dining room staff was friendly but the Thursday salad bar was skimpy with not much choice as no bell peppers, etc (the slaw was almost all mayo). The wall in the bathroom was so banged up with paint coming off and was an eye sore.Lamp hangers were still in the ceiling from the 1960's hanging lamps, but no lamps. The air conditioner was leaking water on to the patio with dead bugs in it as we had to step by to use the patio. There was not a little table as most places offer to set our coffee on so I had to take a kitchen chair to the patio to use as a table. Either bending to get the cup up from the floor or toting the chair to the patio both were painful for me.Things just were not as nice and comfortable as they were in the past. I really wish the State of AL would spend some money to make it more desirable, as Pickwick Lake did a couple years ago. Again, the staff is wonderful as one of the maintenance men saw me struggling to get my bag out of our truck car and he jumped right in to help me. Cindy, a housekeeper, saw me again struggling with luggage as we were leaving and came immediately to help me realizing we were an elderly handicapped people. It seems things that most hotels do or provide, you did not this time, making it difficult for us . Perhaps because our health is poor now and everything is more difficult. Thank you.

We went there to find out about the cabins. The lady at the front desk was very helpful and friendly.she told us that they had served lunch in the dining room. We went down to get lunch. The young man came to the table and took our order. We sat there for 50 minutes or more. He waited on other tables and served them. He finally came back to our table and asked us what we ordered because he had forgotten to put our order in. We felt that was rude, and if he didn't want to serve us, he could have told us. Instead of walking past us all that time. We were thinking our food was getting ready.
