During my time at the University of Alabama, where I was pursuing a diploma in teaching, I had the unique opportunity to explore the Moundville Archaeological Park. Located in Moundville, AL, USA, this park is a captivating journey into the rich history of Native American culture. I was struck by the impressive mounds and well-preserved artifacts that date back to the pre-Columbian era. The park offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives and customs of the Mississippian people, with its informative exhibits and a reconstructed village. The serene natural surroundings are perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the staff's knowledge and enthusiasm make the experience truly engaging. It's a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about the heritage of the Southeastern United States.

It would have been 5 stars but when we were there, many items had been removed because they were supposedly funerial objects and one whole wing was closed. The items we could see were excellent. We were just disappointed in the number if missing items. We also stayed in the campground. It could be an excellent campground but a lot of the sites had broken water valve covers and even broken handles on the water valves. I don't know if it's due to vandals or storm damage but the broken covers pose a danger, particularly in the dark. The shower had great pressure, but with no shower curtain between the shower and the hanging hooks and bench, everything got wet. Maybe add one more to each stall. We'd like to return if more objects become available to view.

Moundville is one of the most amazing places that I have ever experienced in my life. As you're coming down the road to the park, you get a glimpse of it when you come through the gate, but when you pop out of the woods and over the railroad tracks, the magnificence becomes reality. It is quite large, has a very rich history, with ties to many modern Native American tribes, and the park itself is well taken care of. The staff is solid, the museum is world class, they have a river overlook for the Black Warrior River, and the big Mound itself is a blast to climb, also with a great view. They also have both a modern, and primitive campground, and a bathhouse. If I could give them 10 stars, I would.

A wonderful adventure full of rich history. The museum and cafe are small but very modernized. I appreciate that some of the artifacts that used to be on display were given back to the indigenous peoples from whence they came. It’s a must see for anyone interested in ancient Native American culture and architecture. Oh the mysteries those mounds still hold!

This was great place to visit. They have 2 mounds you can walk up which give you a great view of how large the settlement was. There are several wallinking trails, a village you can walk through, a river over look and a museum. The museum also has food and drinks for sale.

We went for the Native American Festival. I have to confess I was disappointed! The crowd was HUGE even on a Thursday. The handicap parking was not very close to anything! I felt we did not get our money's worth. It was $10 to get into the park. It always irritates me to spend money to gain the "priviledge" of spending my money!! I thought there would actually be true Native Americans displaying their handmade items and demonstrating how they were made! There were a few Natives but they were selling mass produced items or cheap made jewelry for high prices! I had thought to see a true native dance or something similar. There were only 4 food trucks. One was burgers and dogs, one snowcone, one Italian food, and one other one (tacos maybe?). Not much choice at all. I was so tired, hot and aggravated I forgot to even take pics! A very long drive, 99 miles each way and expensive gasoline just to purchase the "opportunity" to purchase items that you can find at any good flea market or "Trade Days"! Overall, a huge disappointment!

Great fun and history for the family but the festivals are where the real fun is when the kids get to see history in action. And great coffee and snack shop.

A wonderful place to spend the day! We went with family and spent the day wandering around the site, spending time in the museum, at the exhibits, and gift shop and checking out the areas near the water! It was warm, so bring water! It was great to see the University really looking at the artifacts they had on display. A great place to spend a day, lots to learn!

Very educational! I went with some friends and definitely worth the $8 to get in. It’s insane to think these mounds have lasted hundreds of years. The museum was really cool and they also had natives performing outside. Super cool trip, highly recommend!

Loved exploring the history of this place. And admission was relatively inexpensive. When my kids and I went some Choctaw from Mississippi were putting on demonstrations, and there is authentic indigenous craftwork for sale in the gift shop (see the basket in the pics).

What a great place to take the family. It was a very informative and enjoyable trip to take that is only 15 to 30 minutes from Tuscaloosa. I'm definitely going back. Highly recommended. They even have campgrounds. Plus WiFi.....Definitely go here.

The size and scope of this park at 300 acres and 29 mounds with the tallest at 60 ft brings awe and wonder! After Columbus we don't learn about native American history until the Mayflower arrives. It's hard to believe the Mississippian and native Americans built such incredible cities!

It was a pleasant and interesting way to spend a few hours. We enjoyed the information and the museum, as well as exploring the mounds and trails. I do recommend bug repellent or long sleeves and pants if you plan to hit the trails, because there are a ton of mosquitoes! (It is nature after all).
