I prefer Dollar General. Family Dollar is a quick place to pop-in and get the smallest of necessities for me. I've only ever been in two decent FD's. Not my choice for Dollar store shopping.

I'm a little biased on this one but it's a good store with good service. Not the biggest store or biggest selection but you can generally find what you need.
