We happened upon Jake's while driving through Birmingham during lunchtime looking for good, fried catfish. The plus was Jake's was also a Caribbean restaurant. I had the curried chicken with Caribbean rice and fried sweet plantains. My husband had the catfish platter, which was a beautifully fried, crisp piece of white meat filet. The curried chicken was delicious - a nice-sized drumstick and thigh, which were braised to perfection - moist and tender with no fat, how do they do that?? The curry was tasty and went perfectly with the rice. I love sweet plantains, and I was served a generous portion, so I had leftovers. I highly recommend Jake's!! Affordable, delicious food and generous portions, can't beat that!!

I decided to try Jake's Soul Food Cafe for lunch and it did not disappoint. The server was very nice and greeted me when I walked in. She was also very patient with me since it was my first time trying their food and wasn't sure on what to get. I ordered the smothered turkey wings with white rice and the 3 cheese macaroni and cheese. The food was good but it was also very pricey. The restaurant itself was well lit and very welcoming. I can say I will be coming back and highly recommend anyone who's looking for a good soul food spot.

Jakes was just ok. They need to update their online menu. The chicken wings are good as well as the pork chops. I was SO excited to try their sweet potato casserole because they claim to have "The Best", but I totally disagree. I had to doctor it up in order to eat it. I like sweet cornbread, theirs isn't sweet at all. I wouldn't rush back, but there were a few people placing orders while I was there. Others obviously enjoy it.

Went for the jerk chicken. Wasn't really jerk season. More so spicy bbq sauce. Staff was super nice but just missed the mark on the chicken. Good for bbq chicken though. I liked the spice. I would go back to try the other food

Really good food, outstanding service, and a welcoming environment. I would recommend it in a heartbeat. If I am ever back in the Birmingham area, I would go back, no questions. I highly recommend the chicken wings, they were a pretty big serving (6 full wings) or the smothered turkey wings. I was genuinely surprised with the mac and cheese too, great seasoning, kind of peppery. My kind of meal!

Looks great. Nice Place but Over priced everything. Small portions of rice and peas is not a thing Caribbean restaurants do. If anything there is too much Rice n Peas. They want $34 for an oxtail plate with a kids size Rice n Pea's. lol. The taste of the food is good but not worth the over priced menu. It's really unnecessary to charge what they are charging for the portion sizes. I will not go back.

The oxtails were awful. Very little if any meat on the bones. I trashed them. How in hell could someone sell such a dish?

This is one of those places where you go to the counter to place your order. Then a server brings the order to you. The server was a very friendly woman who answered my questions. (This was my first visit). I had Cajun fried shrimp with black eyed peas and cabbage. All I can say is that I will go again. Everything was great.

Yelp, Yelp Hooray! JAKES HAS REOPENED THEIR DINE IN!!! From the time you walk in, the new layout is nice. There is new digital menu signage, TV's galore and a big mural of Comedian Joy pictured with a pork chop. This is so inviting! I love it! And Jake's does not disappoint! We are greeted as we enter and before we ordered, Aleigh let us know, "we are out of sweet potato casserole, fried okra, waffle mix, and Salmon croquettes"! At first I was like, you have nothing. But after reviewing over this menu, there is plenty to eat here. Today, we are a party of 3, Bae, Dee and me. Bae got the Oxtails with Caribbean rice and Mac and cheese. Dee got the combo plate with fried wings and a pork chop with collards and black eyed peas. I got the Turkey wings with Caribbean rice and cabbage! This delicious cornbread accompanies every meal. Man, this stuff here good. Everything! And, these servers are so nice Akeia and Aleigh were attending to our every need. Not just us, everyone in the dining area seems to be enjoying this winning combination, good food with good service. Thank you ladies. Keep up the good work. We here for this food though, and this stuff here is good. Y'all already know, when the food is right, I'll be back!

They have upgraded the inside very nice. However, the service has been downgraded. My carryout order was wrong when I got home. However, the receipt on the bag did show the correct order that I had placed. I called them and asked if could I come back and get what I paid for. I was told, "No, you will have to place another order for that item." She then said, "That's why we encourage customers to check their order before they leave." I did not want anything for free just what I paid for. They made a mistake and tried to make me out of a lie, saying "I'm sure it is in the bag." I told her it was not! JAKES SOUL FOOD CAFE DID NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS MISTAKE. It was VERY upsetting and disappointing. THEY WILL MESS UP YOUR ORDER AND IF YOU DON'T CHECK IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE - IF IT'S WRONG, IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT! When $90+ is spent at the restaurant, I would expect the right food to be in the bag. Make your customers WHOLE when you error!! I took pictures to upload as evidence. Unfortunately, that is not an option.

I did a take out order which took about 15 minutes they weren't busy. My boyfriend had the catfish he said it was good along with the black eyed peas, which were the best part of the meal but the Mac tasted like he was just eating noodles. I had the salmon croquettes. Everything I had was good but I wish I would've gotten grits. It would've made it better. I loved the corn bread, it was sweet how I like it.

Jakes is a great, local place for good food with a casual vibe. I went with the curry chicken, a staple of Caribbean menus. For sides, I had collards and fried okra. It was served with a generous piece of cornbread. The okra was hot and fresh and the collards were great. I've never been to a soul food restaurant that didn't have pepper sauce on the table but the greens were fine as is. A bit of pepper sauce, and they would have been perfect. The chicken was flavorful but a bit overcooked and as much as I hate to say it, the curry was a letdown. While the flavors were good, it desperately needed some heat. I've had this dish at other restaurants and it always seems to have a kick, while Jake's was totally mild. Again, it was good, but way too mild for my tastes. The cornbread was perfect. Moist, sweet and with the perfect texture. The service was wonderful and I'll be back.

Cabbage, collards, plantains oh my! All the soul food favorites in one place. I was eating plant based this day so I can only brag about the soul food trinity plus cornbread. Collards and cabbage were seasoned the old fashioned way...iykyk...remember pot liquor? Plantains had those dark brown ends where all the flavor melds together with a light crunch and the cornbread required fork tines to get every crumb. This was my first visit but it won't be my last.
