I recently had both routine and emergency experiences with Castaway Animal Clinic, and my feelings are mixed. While I acknowledge Dr. Bronwen Horschell's impressive educational background, my encounters with her have left me with reservations, resulting in a 1-star rating. On routine visits for vaccinations and dental care, I found Dr. Horschell lacking in what some might call "bedside manners." In my personal opinion, a more compassionate approach and effective communication would greatly enhance the overall experience. The pivotal moment that led to my disappointment occurred during an emergency farm call for a horse experiencing colic. Dr. Horschell promptly arrived and assessed the situation, assuring me that the horse's heart rate was normal and that he needed to be monitored overnight. Seeking a second opinion, we contacted Auburn University. To my dismay, Auburn University's evaluation contradicted Dr. Horschell's assessment. They identified that the horse's heart rate was not normal and, more critically, his colon had flipped from its usual position. Despite their recommended treatment, the unfortunate outcome was the loss of the horse.Reflecting on this difficult experience, I can't help but wonder if a more thorough examination by Dr. Horschell could have led to a different outcome. While I respect her expertise, I hope this review serves as constructive feedback for improvement in both communication and the depth of assessments during critical situations. In addition to my concerns with the veterinary care at Castaway Animal Clinic, I must highlight a subsequent issue that has added to my disappointment. Jessica Kendrick from the clinic contacted me, asserting that the gelding in question was overdue for vaccines. This revelation indicated a significant oversight in the clinic's record-keeping, as the horse's file had not been closed despite two previous phone calls confirming his unfortunate demise. This lack of attention to administrative details has not only caused frustration but has also stirred up negative emotions and memories associated with the loss of the horse. It underscores the importance of thorough and accurate documentation, especially when dealing with sensitive matters such as the death of a beloved animal. The overall experience, marked by both clinical and administrative shortcomings, leaves me with heightened reservations about Castaway Animal Clinic's ability to provide comprehensive and compassionate care. My hope is that these concerns are taken seriously and addressed to prevent similar distressing experiences for other clients in the future.

I am from out of town and was in AL for the holidays. My dog has been having some issues, and I ran out of a medication for him earlier than expected. While my vet and most in the area were all closed, I was referred to Castaway. Even though they were only on call for emergencies, they helped me to get the medication I needed for my dog. I could not be more grateful. I was not a client, and they still helped me. Could not recommend them enough!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

My dog is an antisocial dog (not by my choice) so she doesnt like people. They made her feel comfortable (still a little nervous cause its a vet) but she started to trust them and they are amazing

Highly recommend this clinic. They were so quick and compassionate when my baby was in pain and we didn’t know it but it would be his final hours. They explained everything so well and helped us so kindly through the process of taking away our boy’s pain. Cannot thank everyone here enough.

Update - they sprang into action when we tragically lost our Boxer to an accident. Words cannot frame the care and dignity shown to our dog and our family during the process. Good vet and friendly staff.

My husband and I have taken our dogs here for the past couple of years. They are always very kind, compassionate, and accommodating! We have three dogs and sometimes get their appointments mixed up and they always find a way to squeeze them all in and work with us. We moved an hour away and still take our dogs here!
