We went for the dinner theater but didn't book a room. It was very clean looked really nicely updated. I have no idea what they used as air freshener, but it was horrible. Not so bad in the lobby but the smell was so strong in the bathroom that it gave me and my friend a migraine. The bar was nice but I feel I was taken advantage of. When asked if I had a preference of vodka I replied no. I was then given top shelf and charged $32 for 2 simple drinks. If paying those prices you should be asked if top shelf was ok.Food & drinks: Careful telling the bartender that you don't have a preference of alcohol..... you'll get top shelf and won't be told until you see your bill.

The room is great and staff is friendly/helpful. Resident bar leaves a lot to be desired and has overpriced food and drinks compared to surrounding fair.Stay here but be prepared to travel elsewhere for meals.Updating review - gave the bar another shot and had a significantly better experience. The house infusions were great and had a great atmosphere.

This is a very convenient hotel with all the expected perks of a Marriott. I attended a meeting here this morning and was a little disappointed to find that the coffee bar had closed and in order to get a cup of coffee, I had to go across to the bar/restaurant and track someone down who was working in the back to get coffee. The employee was polite and sold me a coffee that i took across to the other side of the hotel to the meeting room. After that, all worked out great as the meeting area was fine and the hotel itself was beautiful.

Mr. Maddox. Really unsure where to start. Marriott has a gem of a human on their staff. Not only did he look after me, I noticed how he worked the room to ensure that each, literally, each guest was taken care of. For example, the young lady who was preparing to exit with a bagel in her hand. Mr. Maddox politely intercepted her and offered to give her a to-go box to which she smiled and accepted. I have an immense amount of respect for this gentleman's demeanor, humility, and authenticity. Thank you, Mr. Maddox. I will spread the word about your service and I will definitely visit again. Also, Marriott customers: I urge you to LEAVE. A. TIP. when you dine and/or visit the member's lounge. It is the right thing to do for these individuals who are serving us. Blessings!

Sticking to my loyalty to Marriott, I booked a room here instead of at a nearby Hilton property with my friends, and boy do I wish I would have followed my friends. First, the lobby smells like a strong shaving cream which wouldn’t have been awful if it was a temporary smell but it stretches from the main lobby to the elevator. Secondly, it was prime time for showers and getting ready for bed so I didn’t make a huge fuss about the shower water not being hot. The next morning, I experienced a warm shower. I would possibly turn up the water heater a bit or increase the capacity of the existing water heater. Finally, upon returning home, I receive a couple of emails and I see it’s just my receipt. Once I actually opened it and gave it a glance, I noticed I was charged additional fees based off the word of a housekeeper. The room was nice but definitely over priced for location.Safety: Additional entrances and exits are locked unless you have an active room key which is great!

I was here on business, but I've NEVER seen a Marriott look like this! Cobwebs all over the room, something splattered on the light in the bathroom. I told the bellman, who intercepted me from the front desk; who said they'd take care of it. The webs were still there when I left.

I am a Marriott Gold Elite Member (over 25 nights in a year). My last stay at this Marriott --- when I returned to my room at 1:00 AM --- my entire bedding was gone -- stripped down to the mattress. I went to the front desk and after waiting for 20 minutes --- was brought out a pile of sheets and blankets --- and handed to me. No offer to have someone come make up the bed --- just "here you go". Had to go back and make my bed and an hour after getting to my room I was able to get in bed (without a mattress pad) at 2:00 AM -- and so worked up didn't fall asleep until 3:00. Up at 7:00 for meetings. I discussed with the front desk the next morning and was told "we will definitely make this right". I asked for Marriott Points. The next day I was told I would get 10,000 points --- which doesn't even get me a free night in the worst of Marriott hotels. I told them I expect 30,000 points to make for a free night in a decent Marriott hotel. They told me they would make it happen. Two months later --- nothing happened. I follow up again with them --- and I am now told --- "Your request has been denied ---- what happened does not constitute a free nights stay". Seriously. Worst customer service I have ever seen at a hotel. I have cancelled my upcoming reservations at this Marriott and will stay at other hotels on my many trips to Birmingham going forward.Response to Owners Response:False. This is just words and hot air. Marriott has done NOTHING to make this right. In fact, they have gone out of their way to make it worse. All they have done is give me the run around over 30,000 pts vs. 10,000 pts.. Dropped it completely until I followed-up -- then denied the experience warrants a full nights stay of points. Apparently your standard of hospitality is to make customers make their own beds. There was nothing "stress free" about this experience. It impacted my business the next day. The first thing you can do with "evaluating" your response is to actually compensate me as was promised. I feel so disrespected --- companies claiming "exceptional hospitality" in marketing and social media --- all the buzz words --- but no action to back it up. Back it up with actions and I will revise my review.

I always love Marriott hotels. However, this one is an exception. Our room was not up to Marriott standards. The wall paint was not uniform and chipping, the tub had rust spots on several spots, the door handle to the bathroom fell off on our first night. We were unable slide the door open and closed. The safety rail the shower of room 709 was hanging off the shower wall with the screw extending out. I have never done a bad review of any hotel. Paying over $300 a night for a hotel room that was like what I assume a lower scale hotel would be like was unsettling. On Saturday night around 10pm, my husband and I went to the small shop next to the front desk to purchase some snacks. While in there, there was a horrible smell of sewage. I am not sure if it was an actual sewage leak or the person in the check out window passing gas. That needs to be investigated if it is indeed sewage.I will never stay at this hotel again in Birmingham and will not recommend it to friends. It’s a shame because our daughter is at UAB, and we will frequently be visiting.Rooms: Rooms are in very poor condition.Safety: Hazards with handles falling off door and and safety rail in tub falling off.
