Hearing parents: Please do NOT send your students to schools using LSL techniques! Studies have proven that using ASL further develops English and ASL skills and these children score higher on intellectual development. Academics aside, children need language and to be surrounded by role models like them. That means Deaf Schools with Deaf instructors with ASL. I went to a Deaf school and I am extremely literate and academically successful. Please listen to Deaf adults, and do whats right for your child emotionally and academically. Don't take the easy way out by sticking some hearing aids on your child and making them speak your language. Learn ASL. They will thank you one day. My parents never learned ASL and I resent them for it, and I know many others who do as well. A bilingual educational approach is always the best option.

Memphis Oral School for the Deaf is a treasure in our community! They prepare children to enter kindergarten and thrive. Teachers and staff are not only fully trained but they pour into these children each and every day. Apart from children, MOSD also offers hearing screening and hearing aids for all ages. Insurance and Medicare are accepted. Job well done MOSD!

MOSD is a little gem in the heart of Germantown. I cannot articulate just how much my family and I appreciate each and every staff member, SLP, teacher and audiologist who have helped our profoundly deaf 2 year old learn to listen and speak, with her bilateral cochlear implants. Modern medicine and technology are miracles of our time, and having MOSD in our hometown has enabled our family to appreciate such incredible breakthroughs for deaf/HOH individuals. Thanks to the individualized care received at MOSD (thru private speech therapy lessons multiple times a week, small class sizes with teachers of the deaf, audiology services on site, etc.) our child is happy, healthy and thriving — the three things any parent could ever ask for! MOSD has become a second family to us, and we are eternally grateful for the huge impact it has made on our child’s progress and future. The sky is the limit!

My son is hard of hearing and wears a hearing aid. He has been a student at MOSD since he was six months old. He was part of both Sound Beginnings and Sound Transition classes until he was two years old. Within these programs we learned how to encourage a language rich home, how to incorporate vocabulary into routines play and reading, and how to create an ideal listening environment in the house. Our amazing speech pathologist and audiologist spent a lot of time those first two years of my son's life helping us to understand his hearing loss, helping us learn how to explain it to others and how support him so that he is set up for success. Since he turned two years old, he has been a student in the full time preschool receiving speech therapy, aural habilitation, and a language rich curriculum in a small class size. My son is thriving because of his hearing device paired with the hard work and passion of his teachers, speech pathologists, audiologists, and staff at Memphis Oral School for the Deaf. He loves being a part of the world of sound with his hearing peers, and we owe so much of his success to MOSD! If you are considering spoken language and hearing devices for your deaf or hard of hearing child, Memphis Oral School for the Deaf is an incredible asset we have in our community for you to join.

As the parent of a child who attended school here for 4 years as a young boy I have nothing but positive things to say about this school, this organization and the people I have worked with over the last 14 years. The fact is that my son would not be where he is today, he would not be attending a normal school with his hearing peers learning, listening and talking just like them. This school and the people involved with this school are amazing!

My niece is an MOSD alumna. She attended MOSD from ages 1-5, and absolutely loved every single day!! This is an incredible school! She is profoundly deaf with bilateral cochlear implants. MOSD and their amazing teachers, audiologists, and speech pathologists worked with her and taught her how to listen and talk. What MOSD did for her and our family is truly miraculous. She is excelling in mainstream school now in 4th grade and on the Honor Roll. She loves to listen to music and play the guitar. We are deeply grateful to MOSD for helping her learn to listen and talk. She loves her CI processors and calls them her "ears". We are so fortunate to have this option so close to home, and our family continues to support this amazing school!!

Audiological advancements have made it possible for children with hearing loss to access sound early in life. MOSD helps children build those foundational listening skills.

Such an amazing school! As a parent of a deaf child, once we made the decision that our son would have cochlear implants, we knew there would be a difficult road ahead of us to help him learn to listen and talk. They have helped our son improve his speech in ways that we would never be able to! The school helps many children with various levels of hearing impairment, and different types of hearing devices. So thankful for their experience and professionalism that they provide!

What kind of school for the deaf doesn’t allow the use of sign language? Doesn’t have anyone on staff that uses it? I’d been told quite a few negative things about this school. I’d hoped those were old practices/incidents but it looks like this school hasn’t changed. It’s so disappointing but even worse, oppressive to our deaf community and our culture. I’m not sure what they think they’re accomplishing here but they aren’t here to help deaf children. This place is a cruel joke.As a deaf mom of deaf child, I would never send my child here. I even gave your information back to your receptionist before I left. You’re welcome.

I am a current board member of the Board of Directors at MOSD, and I cannot say enough wonderful and good things about this fantastic organization. Their mission of "Empowering Deaf Children to Learn to Listen and Talk" is truly incredible and is at the heart of everyone who works there and all who support this wonderful school.

This school is terrible and ableist. Being Deaf means that you can't hear. That means that listening is not an option. This school takes away the abitity of children to communicate. Dead people dont need to be fixed, or 'blend in'. Learning all is also very important to communicating with Deaf peers. The Deaf community in the US is relitivly vast. This school does not teach the skills to be able to communicate with others in the Deaf community, thus isolating the children later on.

What a great organization. The staff at the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf is doing incredible work in the Memphis area. Programs like the preschool program give their students such a great opportunity to learn in a structured and organized classroom setting. Keep up the great work!

They are so loving and kind with all of the children and parents. They work with the parents to provide a learning environment that is tailored for each child. The teachers and therapists teach the children to use the sounds they are able to hear to understand their environment, and to communicate more effectively. I appreciate all they do.
