My 2019 truck Dodge RAM 1500 had a mileage 79,000 km. The 5-years warranty from the manufacturer just expired 2 months ago, when a loud grinding noise started to appear from under the front.
I went to MIDAS shop near me (542 The Queensway S, Keswick, ON L4P 3G9) to have my truck inspected. This is a shop I’ve used previously many times for all my needs with brakes replacements, etc.
Manager of the store (Dan) took it for a drive and came back saying that the car is not safe to drive, as the front differential has gone. He recommended immediate replacement. Dan has told me that he recommends installing used (like new) differential with only 55,000 km on it. According to him, normally differentials supposed to last over 300,000km, and this used one is in such a good shape that it will last me a life-time (even though, the warranty on used parts and labor is only 90 days). Trusting the professional, I’ve agreed and in the next 2 days the differential was replaced.
On the very first day after I’ve picked up my truck from the shop, I was still hearing the same (if not worse) loud noise from under the car. I’ve returned back to the shop, and Dan seemed knew that repair he has done is not to the standard, because he immediately acknowledged the noise and told me to bring car back in a week for warranty replacement. He booked an appointment for me and I came back in a week. Dan has apologized and said that he cannot take me as his mechanics are busy with another car, he suggested I come back next day and again has booked an appointment for me. After that, I was coming to the shop almost every day for the next nearly 3 weeks (more than 10 times), every time to hear another excuse why I need to come tomorrow.
Eventually, on October 29 he has taken my car and replaced the front differential once again. Even though he was hinting that I should pay at least for labor, I was not charged and it was done on warranty. Answering my question about the state of this replacement part, Dan has assured me that he personally tested it and differential is “better than new”.
Minutes later, driving away from the MIDAS parking lot, I hear that noise is still there, even louder than it was before. I’m not a car mechanic; I started to doubt myself: maybe this is a way it should be? Licensed experienced mechanic (such as Dan) would not knowingly mislead me and send me on the road in unsafe vehicle!
I kept driving car with this noise for a week, and eventually decided to get a second professional opinion. I’ve booked an appointment with New Roads Dodge dealership, where I originally purchased my truck, and paid $200 out of pocket to have my truck checked.
Dealership has given me a written report, indicating that front differential is broken, leaking oil and has a loud grinding noise. Dealership has recommended it to be replaced immediately.
I went back to MIDAS to show this report to Dan and have him check my truck again. Dan has taken it as a personal insult, saying that when he replaced the differential a week ago, it was perfect. And “dealership do not know what they talk about”. He refused to even inspect the truck again. Dan said that he does not trust dealerships as “they are all crooks”. Instead, he will show it to his friend, who supposedly a “car racing driver”, and will wait for his friend’s opinion. I’ve asked Dan if his friend a certified and licensed Dodge mechanic? Dan said: No, but he has been driving cars all his life and his opinion is of more value than any other expert.
I insisted that Dan at the very least inspects my truck himself, the noise is so loud and evident, that not a chance he would miss it. Dan refused to even touch my car without presence of his “expert”.
Now, almost two months later, after more than 15 visits to MIDAS, I still drive an unsafe truck with broken differential. MIDAS 90-days warranty is still in place, but they refused to even look at it.

Hi I have worked in the service in automotive and highly recommend this team. We were stuck far from home with a broken truck . Bob I hope I have this right you saved the day. Sure we were there all day due to parts issues and even been told by the dealer nothing in Canada bob pulled a rabbit out of a hat got the part and the team stayed together and got us back on the road..thanks again for everything they did.

Dropped off in morning and a couple hours later the rear brakes with rotors were ready. Price was good; they gave me some recommendations for consistent inspections, and I was on my way. Polite and friendly service.
