I used to have a job that gave me as a inkind donation for 30 days that the nonprofit organizations to use me how they wish. Most nonprofits are always 1 or 2 people behind what they need to function as well as a for profit business. I did this for 3 years. One of my first volunteer jobs was Skywatch. I have worked with both local and national non profits and this is the only one I stayed with and did since day 1. I have seen a lot of the behind the scenes dealing and with some I flat out refuse to support them and also shout to the roof tops on how badly they are run or are fishy with the practices. Skywatch is the only business that is above board and it has become my "Happy Place"! It's not just the birds but the people and after I lost my 18 yr old son it became my lifeline! After he died I could not go back to a corporate job and deal with the politics often found in most jobs. I was lucky enough that I can survive without a paycheck from me and have dedicated all of my time to being a volunteer at the rescue. Which means 13+ hours a day 6 days a week and during baby season i am on the phone with someone thst entire time! I'm the on you speak to when you call about a bird. Being Generation X I remember my mother giving me a bird info book after I told her I was board and wanted to come into the house. She said here take this and get out... only for years later I now not only can identify multiple birds but also their behavior and can spot injuries from grainy photos! Saving birds saved me, helping birds but also supporting an organization that is a wonderful and much needed service in this area. It's not a small organizations and I have seen true impact of its services in birds that once were rare like Anhingas which were deep marsh birds who we rarely saw unless they got hit by a car to go to Monkey Junction and seeing 1 in most ponds or wood storks extinction in this area for decades to them coming back and nesting in Brunswick!

I have been volunteering here for around 2 years, and it is easily the most rewarding thing I have ever been a part of, or ever will be. I initially came in once a week on the weekends to clean cages for the rescued birds of prey in residence there, but quickly found myself itching to do more, and be more for the birds who needs places like SkyWatch. I’ve been a part of remarkable things since then, from daring rescues that seemed near impossible, to releasing confident, adult birds who I first met as defenseless nestlings, to teaching an inspired room of children to care about these birds as much as I do. All of this is made by possible by Amelia, Caroline, and community members who volunteer their time, rain or shine, or no matter the distance or circumstances. New Hanover County - and North Carolina statewide - are lucky to have a resource like this that truly lives up to its mission to give birds, and any animal who needs their helping hand, a chance to soar once more.

I've been visiting Skywatch for about a year now and have been truly touched by the love and compassion I have seen from the owners as well as the volunteers. They truly want the best for all of the animals that come into their facility. Those that are in rehabilitation and those who become a permanent residents. I am grateful for everything they do to try to save those that can't save themselves. Thank you for all that you do for these animals! ❤

SkyWatch Bird Rescue is amazing. We took a bird there that the cat brought in and they were great. They kept us informed as to how the bird was doing and took great care of it until it was released again. They take in all sorts of animals - not just birds and do it all on donations and with volunteers. I can't say enough good things about SkyWatch Bird Rescue.

I'm a wildlife rehabilitator in Carolina Beach. In addition to rehabbing small mammals, I spend some of my time capturing and transporting birds for Skywatch. I've done this on and off for over a decade. Amelia and the small team that works there regularly are nothing short of amazing. They care for a huge number of resident animals daily - from donkeys to ducks. On top of that, from about mid-march to the beginning of fall, they are not only caring for a constant stream of injured birds and birds removed from hoarding or abusive situations, they are hand -feeding babies, which is an around the clock task, AND performing coordinated rescues and releases around town. Even with all of that on their plate, I don't think I've ever heard of them refusing to take in a bird.
The birds of New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick county are extremely lucky to have such a resource nearby. We all benefit from their tireless work.

we found a nestling that was orphaned because cats killed its family. it was not touched by the cats because we picked it up and put it inside, it was not touched by the cats at all. I immediately tried to find rescues and since I don't have a phone number I was glad to see the email option. I mentioned how I can only get a ride the next day since i dont have a car, and they said this was urgent so they'll ask a volunteer to pick it up today and I sent my address they said they'll contact me when they're on their way and not to feed the bird. I never heard from them, they never came, and the baby bird died over 24hrs later. I'm so disappointed because I had hope for this bird, it could've made it if they had picked it up. I contacted them 3 times since then and nothing. I got someone else to call and no response.

These people might provide a good service to birds in need, unfortunately I can't find anyone else around here. But be warned, I just left there and was yelled and screamed at, told "This is a private residence!" After communicating on the phone with some of their volunteers and being given the address, I told the volunteers I'd be there in 10 minutes with the injured bird I found in my neighborhood. When I arrived at this dark, overgrown, decrepit house, there was no sign of life. I beeped my horn to see if anyone was there, making sure I wasn't dropping off an injured animal where it would be unattended and not cared for. The response I got was rude, hateful, disrespectful, and very creepy. The woman cracked a window from a dark room upstairs and asked me if I was there to drop off a bird. It was only 8:00 at night, had barely gotten dark. She came down and screamed at me for beeping my horn and started ripping me a new one for simply doing the right thing and trying to bring her an injured bird. Her boyfriend soon came to the door and I then was able to recognize that it's quite clear, they are on drugs. Hiding out in a dark house, highly unsocial, not capable of basic conversation, very very rude and standoffish. I recommend trying to find anywhere else to take an injured animal. These people are screwed up.

2nd Sunday I called from Fort Fisher at the Rocks, about a Duck about to die. I drove this poor duck to them and did not get a returned call till after I drove 45 min or more to bring the duck to them. Insane the lack or heart they have. Duck died in my lap on the way, hopefully they can do Tests and see what's going on with all the ducks dying at the beach. Love you Ducky...you are at peace

Although I think this agency helps many animals, I was surprised when I was attacked by a pack of 5 dogs (bitten by one of the owners’ dogs) while on the premises. I am concerned for particularly children and older adults visiting the site. There is no doubt my outcome would have been worse had there not been a fence about 15ft away I could climb on and try to get away-something a child or older adult could not have been able to do-Luckily I was able to get up on the highest fence board so the dogs could no longer reach me! But before I made it there, I was bitten on my left forearm with a significant skin tear and my jeans were torn at the right ankle. As I screamed for help one of the volunteers had the owner come and remove the dogs and put them back into their home. The owner’s response and attitude was disappointing to say the least; not the kind of response you’d expect from the owner of a dog that bit you. The husband did come to me after she left and he was kind, but there was NO follow-up from either one, zero. After the injury I left the premises and drove to Medac where the wound was treated, along with getting a tetanus shot and being put on antibiotics. I am sorry to say neither owner ever offered to pay the medical bills, followed up with a phone call, etc. and it has now been a year. I am open to hear from the owners.

Great place to learn about birds. They rehab, release but also have resident birds.
