I took the Matt Long workshop in early June and had a wonderful time. Needless to say, Matt is a genius Potter with expansive knowledge of clay, wheel throwing, hand building and glaze and flashing slips and the chemistry involved and how to apply them to achieve color in the soda kiln. He explains the chemical changes and combustion occurring during the various stages of firing and encourages participation in all phases of the process. Amazing amount of information and learning.
The SCAC itself is a wonderful creative space with tools and supplies, classes and instructors and even students who are welcoming and generous with their time and knowledge. There are Resident Artists who live on site and the Studio Manager, Mark, is equally knowledgeable and helpful. Jill, the Director is so smart and generous to create such a wonderful place for artists to create and learn. There are many ways to participate and enjoy this resource, I highly recommend joining, taking a class, visiting the gallery and the shop, and soaking in the creative culture of Saratoga Clay Arts Center!

5 Stars- amazing. Jill has assembled a top-shelf combination of high-quality artistic space (with kiln variety, materials and vibe), along with a gallery space, artist in residence, and training in both skills and artistry.
Highly recommended.
I just 6/24) attended a workshop with Matt Long- superb teacher and professor of ceramics at U Miss- that covered everything from porcelain clay body features, and artistry to glazes and kiln firing. It was in-depth, technical, entertaining and mind- expanding.
Amazing!
Kudos to Jill Fischon-Kovachak who has created a top-shelf institute with knowledge and awareness of, and connections with, national talents in ceramic arts.

I teach a lot of art classes, and I take a lot of art classes, and this was one of the best expieriences I have ever had. My partner and I attended the Clay Night Out and the entire time had fun, were laughing, were learning a ton of skills, and felt incredibly supported even while making my frankly terrible cup. The moment we get home we were looking into longer classes and membership. Often in art studios it can feel as if you are an elementary schooler, or you are not good enough to be in the club. Our instructor David (the artist in residence)(keep him!!!!) made it clear he was happy we all were there and gave each person attention care and instruction for every level. It was a perfect evening, it’s an incredible center, I cannot sing it’s praises enough.

This is an amazing clay community. Everyone at any level is welcomed and part of the family. I love all the options for firing my pots and how everyone is cheering me on to create better pots.

Signed up for their popular Clay Night Out. Before the class I got a helpful reminder email with a few tips on what to wear, suggestions to trim nails, wear hair up, etc. The place is so much bigger than I expected! There was a cute little studio with art for sale and on display. The pieces were stunning! Our instructor was really knowledgeable and helpful. She offered a step by step demo and then worked through a bowl one step at a time with the group. She and her assistant helped us each personally. They helped with technique, design choices and reminders about the important steps. You can make as many bowls (or whatever other vessels) you'd like. Then you choose your top two pieces to be glazed in one of about 6 options. They glaze, fire and then you can pick them up in about two weeks. A great, different date night or would be an excellent choice for families with teens.

I'm thankful this place exists. My kiddo is enrolled in a wheel thrown pottery class. It seems expensive at first but considering you get unlimited studio time during the class term and firings are included I think it's a great opportunity. We will be taking advantage of the studio time and trying to get lots of practice in.
