I live between Bayshore Harbor freight and Centereach Harbor freight. I purchased an electric power washer in the Bayshore Harbor freight location, to power wash the siding on my house. Needless to say, after an hour of using it, it started to smoke and almost caught fire. I immediately contacted Harbor freight and made them aware. I explained I could not go to the Bayshore location but was going to be in Centereach for another errand. I was told it was fine to make the return at the Centereach store. So, I dried off the power washer, packed it back up and took it back to the Harbor freight in Centereach. Keep in mind the power washer was purchased less than a week prior and used for less than a half hour before it began to smoke. When I returned it, the blonde girl behind the register was more concerned with charging me a 20% restocking fee than she was about the fact that I could have been physically harmed by the broken power washer. She was (in my opinion), rude and unkind, with little to no regard for customer service or my safety. I proceeded with the return and I contacted Harbor freight's customer service center on the phone when I got home and explained. They issued me a refund for the restocking fee, (in the form of a gift card) and apologized. Either way I will look for another tool store to make my purchases. My one question to Harbor freight is why was I beeing charged a restocking fee for an item that was defective? Isn't that an RTV (return to vendor) item. Shouldn't they be charged?
My advice to Harbor freight customers (if you shop Harbor freight), is to shop at the Bayshore store. At least their staff were kind to their customers.

Ok, here's the deal...This is not meant to bash Harbor Freight - it's intended to set realistic expectations, which is the key to getting the best results from the store. No disrespect intended, but in general, you can't believe the claims of "high quality tools" from both their ad as well as certain other reviews. They are absolutely not high quality. They are cheap China-sourced tools. And that's ok, because there's a market for such tools. The vast majority of die-hard Harbor Freight lovers are novice DIYers or marginally handy people that don't appreciate or can't justify the cost of good quality tools.
The store is great for few-time use tools or "throw-away" tools. I am from the electrical trades and can tell you I would never buy a tool from this place to use on a serious project, ever. No matter what anyone says, there's no comparison between trade-quality tools and the one's from HF. You should doubt the credibility of anyone claiming "their tools are just as good as _____" [name any high quality tool manufacturer].
Have nothing more than an occasional 2x4 to cut? Their $35 circular saw will do. Want to assemble or occasionally tinker with your kid's bicycle? Ok their $20 wrench set is perfect for you. Are you a less than handy homeowner? Then you'll love their $19 set of pliers. Get the picture? If you engage in anything more than the most simplistic homeowner 101 tasks, you should buy the right tools. How do I know this? My loving brother who admittedly calls himself "all thumbs" LOVES the store. When I've been called to his house to install or fix something, I've experienced his tool assortment - which is why I now bring my own tools when asked to "help" him with something (Him: "yeah, I have a socket set, here you go..." Me: shaking my head and reminding him why he called me...).
Here's an example of the things I buy from there...Consumables like tarps that I use to lay out under my BBQ grill to degrease it, then wrap it up and throw it away ($3 for a 5x7 tarp). Along with an assortment of small wire brushes to use for the above and then also throw them away ($3.00). Drop cloths to use around the home when painting or to have on the job in case we need to protect something while working above it. I bought some tie-down ratchet straps to keep large items from bouncing around my truck. An extendable magnetic pick-up tool is in my job box to occasionally retrieve small objects dropped in inconvenient places. I also pick up a few of their heaviest-duty (12 gauge) extension cords so I always have enough. Sometimes I leave them on job sites for other trades, so extras come in handy and they're relatively inexpensive. See the pattern of products that I buy? Notice I didn't list any power or hand tools. Only incidentals.
The store is pretty clean and organized and employees are for the most part "adequately mediocre", complete with the standard-issue texting cashiers with hickies on their necks (not the hickies used to bend conduit), although a few reviews mentioned some good stand-outs. I typically don't require assistance when there.
My reviews are all about telling it like it is and setting the proper expectations. You can walk around there and find some decent, inexpensive things that may come in handy sometimes, but definitely don't go there with the mindset of "why would anyone pay more for tools somewhere else?"

The Selden store employees are rude, well they were talking about other things that didn't involve helping customers.
