My car started to make a loud noise, and out of caution, I took it to Ironbound Auto Service, which is much closer to me than my regular mechanic. They put the car on the lift, drove it around, and told me I needed to get the brakes replaced. They quoted me $650 for off-brand, and $850 for dealership brakes. They charged me $50 for the assessment. Because it was going to be an expensive repair, I decided to go to my regular mechanic (Larry at L & W in Rutherford, a truly excellent mechanic!). Larry showed me that there was actually very little wear on my brakes and that the issue was that the e-brake cable had broken. He charged me $87 for the repair, and was baffled that anyone had looked at my brakes and decided there was anything wrong with them. These guys are either crooks or just very, very incompetent mechanics.
