This place is so fun! There's a great amount of history to be learned. The staff is friendly and costumed actors are informative. There are some fun events as well

I like to look at reviews to get a feel for the overall perspective of a place and many of the lower reviews for this place are dated and in my opinion unjustified! First, This is a must see as most of us have no experience with the hardships that the early colonists experienced. This is not a fort but rather a fortified settlement necessitated by the early attacks by the French and their indigenous allies upon the unprotected settlements away from the major coastal cities which were better protected. The host and volunteers are quite informative and although few in number provide informative details regarding the structure and life in the mid 1700s. The best deal for admission if you plan to return for reenactments or just want to visit multiple times is the couples annual or family membership! I am military retired and there is no military discount currently but I don't have a problem with that as this is a charitable member, private corporation and attendee driven enterprise that gets little or no funding from state or federal historical budgets! Finally, the reenactments and other special events make this a must see as many Americans are quickly losing knowledge of the hardships that were experienced creating this great country. Not everything was positive but many colonists and future Americans pursued the dream with good intentions.

We were able to visit during a Timeline reenactor event that included people in uniformed impressions throughout history. Wonderful staff and volunteers were ready to answer questions and the reenactors taught us about various aspects of their various living history representations. Perfect spot to let kids wander and explore. Many renovations and restorations are underway, so the location is only getting better as the dedicated team puts in all the effort!

This is a great time for, well, anyone! My wife and I visited on a Sunday and had a great afternoon. The fort itself is well done, putting yourself in there, imagine what life would have been. The best thing for us is that there is very little that is "Don't touch". The staff are all volunteers and are extremely good. Brought points home that I hadn't considered. In all, yes, you should give this place a visit. Spend a few hours and learn what frontier life in the 1700s was all about.

I attended the Winter Weekend with a friend new to the area and my 12 year old son. The stories told by the reenactors were thought provoking and they answered every question that came up. My son was awed by the lookout tower and most importantly the Blacksmith shop. While the building were warmed by hearth fire and bubbling stew pots, I’m looking forward to visiting in the summer!

The fort is a large square wooden building inside a fence of tall pointed poles. Individual rooms show the primitive conditions of life on this northern outpost of the British colonies. Large mowed grounds are good for walking or picnic. Nice view of Vermont across the Merrimack river. Dog friendly if on leash. Much renovation underway. In summer there are reenactments and costumed interpreters. A tower is great for the view (see photo) but tricky climbing on ladders for anyone not agile.

A group I belong to holds an event there. The fields are always well kept and so is the fort.
