“Someone designated “local guide” gave a 3 star review had some criticisms and this post is a rebuttal. She speaks some truth and some misperceptions. Wednesday night class and some of the other classes might discourage people with little or no dance background. Knowing some basic Latin dance steps would be extremely helpful. It is also true that the place attracts some awesome dancing talent among the attendees. A few have Zumba shoes. I tend to take the second row and marvel at the beautiful flourishes and expertise the dancers on the first row display. There are also plenty of beginners in the back who manage somehow. No one judges.Cathy uses a technique common among to many Zumba instructors. She demonstrates a move that is expected go on for several repetitions and then stops. She might give hand cues in such cases. She might wander among the crowd to make everyone feel included. The idea is to help develop the muscle-body memory. This is very helpful since that’s one of my weak points. My first Zumba teacher didn’t do that at all. She’s fantastic, but that isn’t her thing.Cathy does give hand signals effectively just as every other Zumba teacher I know. A few instructors out there do like to give verbal cues but that’s a personal choice. Here the music is too loud and the studio too well attended for verbal cues to work. In Zumba instructor training non-verbal cues are emphasized.I quit going to one Zumba teacher in Texas who I personally love because she dumbed down the moves too much. If I pick up a choreo on the first try, I’ll be bored. But, a Zumba class for beginners might be something to consider at this venue.I’ve been 4 similar dance/Zumba studios and the experience has been similar. I give high marks to all the Zumba instructors as well as Cathy. The style is similar. I’ve found that the Zumba sessions given in the various health club franchises are generally simpler and less strenuous, so that might be a better option for some. Pick your style.”

“I've been to about 4 anytime fitnesses, and I have to say that uptown anytime takes the cake. The atmosphere they create is one of peace, comfort, and great customer service. I'm always greeted when I walk in the door and if I'm not, it's only because they're busy helping a client or member get fit and walk with them through their fitness journey. Brian who I've spoken with when I need any information, is quick to take the time to relay that info. He's always smiling, and you can tell they genuinely care about each person's own personal fitness and wellness journey. The same attitude Brian has shown me and so many others, you can tell his coworkers do the same. I live in Farmington, and I have made this uptown location my main home gym because of the atmosphere and the spectacular customer service. Keep it up Brian and crew! I appreciate all the work you do, I really do! Take it easy!”

“This is the place you want to train, develop, and build community.I had the privilege of training here for the past few months, I have lost weight, gained endurance, improved my mindset, and built a community. Everyone in this community is very supported, new faces feel like old friends, and their attention to detail when you first start out is unparalleled.The owner Travis is extremely thorough, he is empathetic, kind, and very knowledgable. It is very obvious that he is passionate about this sport and wants to ensure that everyone stays heathy and strong. His vision for the community is carried out by the coaching team he developed.Alex: She is an amazing coach, always welcomes me by name and rememberers my strengths and weaknesses. She has great insights and recommendations on how to improve form as well as inspires motivation from the warm up through the Workout of the Day (WOD). She devotes her time before and after class to check in with members and truly takes an interest in helping them improve their heath.James: I had an opportunity to take one class with him and work beside him for two other classes. If you want to get your mindset in the right spot, take a class from James. He is a technical wizard and helped improve my form throughout warm up. He has amazing energy and its inspiring to be around someone that is so passionate about the sport.Allison: She is phenomenal, she knows how to work the whole class and is the perfect catalyst when you need to dig deep during a WOD. She gives great technical feedback and is a source of motivation throughout the class. “Tangletown CrossFit is without a doubt the BEST gym in the Minneapolis area! As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I can attest to the amazing attention to detail that is put in the programming here. The warm-ups and WODs are excellent! The coaching is fantastic, and the members are very warm and welcoming. “I’m not one to review many things, and when I do it’s truly for some place special. I credit Timberwolf CrossFit for helping me get my quality of life back I trusted and true ways! I started in December and was on several blood pressure medications, and the future felt bleak. After finding some consistency at Timberwolf, my blood pressure is in the normal range after trying all the things! My weight is down 30lbs. And my anxiety is feeling better. I attribute it to the caring community that is Timberwolf. The friendly coaches that care about your goals and successes, the other members that cheer you on as you finish a hard workout. “Easily the best gym I’ve ever belonged to! The community is great and so supportive of all fitness levels. The coaches are awesome, and the workouts are but fun. It’s easy to stay committed because of the people and the programming. The classes are different and challenging every day, so it never gets stale. I’ve been going for about 8 months and can see differences in my body composition, strength, and ability. When I started I knew very little about weight training, the coaches and group support have changed all of that and I’m now in the best shape of my life.”

“I reached out to Union Fitness because I wanted a place to workout at while I was in town visiting family and Jen was kind enough to set me up with a couple classes. I took a circuit style and a more strength training class, both with Joanna, who was fantastic! I get the sense that there's a strong community at Union and I felt like everyone was really kind and supportive of each other. I love all the variety they offer too. I'll definitely do some drop in classes next time I'm in town. Thanks for helping me keep up my routine on vacation!”

“Love this kickboxing-classes gym with great music during their classes! Very beginner friendly. This is the location on Selby Ave in St Paul, and it is so much fun! Every other day is weightlifting classes, and included with the membership is nutrition coaching. Incredibly positive coaches with so much experience. Classes are available Monday-Saturday in the mornings and in the late afternoon/evening. Online classes are also available. Weightlifting is with dumbbells and exercise bands, which promotes great results. No direct sparring (whew!) but rather, you often pair up and share a punching bag (often one person is punching/kicking while the other person does body-weight exercises). Lots of diversity in the classes: Black, white, hIspanic, LGBTQ+, all ages, teachers, nurses, social workers, electricians, overweight, fit…and they are incredibly open to newbies—don’t think that you have to be an amazing expert to start here. :-) They often have specials where you can get the first week free to try it out! They often have 10-week challenges (one person at the location wins $1000!) but you can join in at any time. Most people don’t wait for a challenge to start classes, they just start coming, and then join a challenge when one comes up (about four times a year). Classes are “gamified” in a really fun way that I’ve never seen before, there is email (and Facebook group) support, and everything is done to make the classes as effective, safe, fun, and supportive as possible. Wow!That’s me in the picture. You can’t really tell in the photo, but I’ve lost my Covid-gut in the 2 months I’ve been going! It’s been incredibly good for my mental health, which in turn helps me be not only more effective at work, but also be a more patient and positive family member.”

“I’ve been coming here for 2 years and LOVE it. The instructors are friendly, encouraging, and knowledgeable and really get to know you as you become a familiar face. Nothing makes you more satisfied than a mid-workout shout-out! I enjoy strength-based workouts and the short cardio intervals are perfect for someone who doesn’t love cardio or running (me). “I have been attending Defy workout classes for about a year and a half now. It has been a fantastic experience. The workouts are challenging and include a lot of variety - never boring.The trainers have always been extremely friendly, motivating and helpful in their instruction, making sure we use correct form, while always helping us to maximize the workout.Our current instructor, Grant, is extremely friendly, helpful and fun. I always leave feeling I had a good workout and was glad I came. It's always good to look forward to a workout rather than dreading it! Grant and the other participants are always friendly and supportive.I highly recommend the West St. Paul location, as well as the Defy class specifically.”
