Punzel is one stop our family tries to make on every trip north-- for the past 7 or 8 years. In that time, we have enjoyed seeing the new building projects and beautiful grounds and woodlands and the unique and lovely items in the shop. Judi has become a friend and she is a hardworking and welcoming person. Highly recommended.

Two years in a row we have driven an hour to get to Punzels because the information online says they are open. Each time we have arrived the store has been closed and he hours posted on the sign are different than what's online. We will never make the trip again.

Feeling very disgusted! My family travels to Michigan every summer from Connecticut for vacation. Two years in a row now we've tried to visit Punzel, driving an hour to get there. However, because the hours posted online are inaccurate, both years the store has been closed. We don't feel the need to ever make an attempt again. Very disappointing.

Punzel's is a wonderfully charming, magical and immersive shopping adventure. Located, most fittingly, off the beaten path, it's worth the trip. Just be sure to call ahead to schedule your visit. Or, if you're lucky, it's sometimes open by chance. If the white gate is open, then Punzel's is most likely open. As you turn into the drive, you'll see the Swedish fairy tale cottage, with heart cut out shutters and a covered porch, with wisteria rambling up and over. After parking in the appropriate spot (parking is labeled for Swedes, Norwegians, etc.), you'll walk over a little bridge to get to the cottage. If you look over each side, you'll spot lots of frogs, in all sizes, along with a sign, warning you to "beware of trolls," (not the internet type!) Once you pass through the front door, you're transported to another world. The owner is knowledgeable about all things Scandinavian, be it history, geography or cultural details, and always happy to chat. She's also incredibly kind and cares about everyone who enters Punzel's. Every room of the cottage is filled to the rafters with Scandinavian goods or Scandinavian themed goods, representing Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland and a few other European cultures. Some things you may find elsewhere, like the Swedish fish candy, region specific cookbooks or the cutest furry animal puppets. But other things, like traditional cookie molds, collectible ceramic gnomes and red capped mushroom figures, imported linens, and region specific imported Christmas ornaments, we've only seen at Punzel's. Imported clogs and clothing are beautiful, well made and functional. There is also an amazing collection of children's books to delight the child in everyone. We love going to Punzel's and try to visit several times each year. Whether or not you can claim a Scandinavian heritage, Punzel's is a delightful experience, not to be missed!

Wonderful, Beautiful store run by a friend of mine. Limited hours, but offers Northern Michigan a unique cultural experience. Feed your inner child with stories and folkloric fun! Tour the grounds and meet trolls, elves and singing frogs. A truly wonderful place.

Punzels is a wonderful place to wander. What a cute little cottage packed with scandinavian culture, tucked in the woods. The owner, Judy is always friendly, and my family always look forward to going to this darling little store...I don't know what "Jeffs" problem is, but the help there is never rude. They are laid back and accomidating. No, they don't take credit cards, because they are a tiny little family business who can't afford to process them (They accept cash and checks). My experience in this store is always great. Must check out for the little treasureS you can find inside.

What can I say about a place that really needs to be seen? This is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Author and illustrator Judy Hauser has transformed her property south of Traverse City into an homage to Scandinavian culture, complete with sculptures, water features, and vignettes from her fairytale stories. Step inside and immerse yourself in the fun, funky, and sometimes funny merchandise - a troll collection that will make your heart stop, Dala horses and pigs, stickers, stationary, Christmas decorations, aprons and napkin rings. Even whole sections devoted to children's clothes, toys, books, and kitchen items... and all from Scandinavia. Not to mention Judy's own books. Perhaps it speaks to me, and my boyfriend's family, because of our heritage, but I really think that anybody can find enjoyment here in one form or other. Especially given the fact that Judy and her staff will, with a reservation ($16 per person), host a gourmet lunch that looks like wood elves and fairies prepared it. Everything edible, even the flowers. While you're digesting, walk the grounds and see the wood elf houses, the pond, the troll cave (with seating) and waterfall... seriously. Judy herself is a character; sweet, imposing, and no-doubt eccentric, but that just adds to the charm of Punzel, an epic adventure.
