I've been taking my cars to Mallek's since my kids were little (now in their 20's and 30's). After I moved across town, I tried a couple other places that were closer and regretted it. I've never trusted any mechanics as much as I do John Mallek and his staff- they are completely fair and honest. This week, I took my car in because when I had it at the dealer for a recall they told me it needed some other things done- over $700 worth of work. I took it to Mallek's. Not only did they do the needed work (and they'll tell you if they feel it's not needed) for far, far less than the dealer quoted me, but John performed a random act of kindness. I had to bike back home from the shop after dropping my car off and planned to bike back to pick it up. I was OK with the approximately 10-mile round trip bike ride. But when I got home they called to say my wheel lock key was missing, which they needed to do the work. After much confusion on my part, I found the kit unopened in my basement. John, understanding that I had transportation issues (my husband is ill and no longer drives) and would have to bike an extra 10 miles there and back, came and picked up the kit from me outside of my home. I was so touched (especially in the midst of Covid) and so grateful that there are still business people like Mr. Mallek who go above and beyond to make life a little easier for someone else. Highly recommend.

Dropping my car off for service at 7AM is typically not how I like to start my day, however, after being told by John to drop it off Thurs morning so they can get it back to me by 11ish, I agreed. Upon my arrival, Allen checked me and took my key...then I took an Uber back home. I then received a phone call at 10AM (3 hours after I dropped it off) from John and he stated, "Um, we don't have you written down on our schedule." Huh?!?!?! We went back and forth for a minute or so, but after getting nowhere and being made to feel that he was being inconvenienced - as if this was an error on my part - I decided to Uber back over and pick up my car without receiving any service. Upon my return, I was greeted by John who appeared just as confused and clueless as he sounded during the phone conversation we had minutes earlier. How could this happen? Why did this happen? Perhaps John made an honest error. If this is the case, on your mistake and make it right for the customer without making them feel like they are an inconvenience to you. Perhaps all of this had to do with the color of my skin (I have brown skin). If this is the case, I feel sorry for John and his ignorance. But I digress. The moral of the story: if you want to waste time, money and deal with a forgetful, non-communicative individual named John, Mallek's if the place for you to get your vehicle serviced! Advise for John: clearly you need to take notes when you have conversations with prospective customers - communication goes a long way.

When I was driving the kid to school, I hit a small bump in the road. This was immediately followed by a loud thud, somewhere under the body of the car. This is when the low rattling sound began. Before making it even a half mile, that low gentle rattle turned into a deeply unsettling metal on metal clanking, and I pulled into a gas station to figure out what I was going to do. First, I put the kid on a city bus, so he could get to school. Then, I checked Yelp to find the nearest reliable mechanic. That's when I called Mallek's. They told me I could bring the car in, and they would try to squeeze it into their full schedule. So I limped the vehicle down mostly back roads, gritting my teeth, and white knuckling it all the way there. Once in the door, I was greeted with a friendly smile, and filled out a form. I was told they could work on my car Wednesday, but might be able to get to it sooner. On Tuesday, I got a call explaining what piece broke off, and a quote for the repair. My spouse was able to pick up the car later that day, and my old car is back on the road. I found Mallek's to be a totally trustworthy and reliable shop. There were no shenanigans. Nobody tried to pressure me to make additional repairs. The mechanic didn't talk down to me even though I know absolutely nothing about cars. The repairs felt to be reasonably priced, and the work was completed sooner than expected. Really, I couldn't ask for anything more.

Honest and very friendly crew. They have done a couple of major auto repairs for me and have never over charged me nor have I had any of the same problems with my vehicle.

I haven't received any work on my vehicle yet, but based on their service on the phone, I have to agree with the reviews I am reading. My low coolant light came on as well as I was in need of an oil change. I called to get their hours and explained my situation. They informed me that they were packed today so I would need to schedule an oil change but to just stop by and they would check the coolant levels for me with no worries. I am from out of town and will need to drive my father who has just had an operation home. I feel completely confident that this establishment will make sure all is well just after the brief conversation I had with them. Fast forward to the experience of actually going. The location was nostalgic of my youth. I wish I lived here as this would be my go to place for my auto needs. Being female who doesn't know much in regard to vehicles, I have to put faith in the mechanics. I have never felt like I could trust one more. They took time to check my coolant, oil, belts, tire treads all to make sure they felt I would have a safe travel home. When asked if I could give them some money for their time, they adamantly refused and wished me a blessed trip and a well wishes for my father.

This business sets the gold standard for auto repair shops in Ann Arbor. They have a friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient staff who provide absolutely honest feedback on work needed on your car. They have serviced our cars for well over 30 years: including a Mazda Miata, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Chevy Citation, Ford Escort, Toyota Corolla, and a Chevy Impala.

Mallek's had been recommended to me from multiple friends. I dropped off my car on a Monday morning, because of engine overheating. Was told to fill out a piece of paper to describe what's going on with the car. On the form, I also wrote I would like them to call before service is started. I didn't want to pay for something that I didn't need. There was no one available to answer questions about what exactly they would do and how much it would be to diagnose it that morning. I waited all day and finally had to call them to see if they had started working on it. When I called, I found they had completed the diagnosis and service, without calling me first. The gentleman on the phone was kind and explained the problem, definitely low coolant, possible internal leak. They also had hooked the car up to the computer system and cleared the check engine light. Fine, cool. The next day the check engine light came on. I could have put the coolant in myself and saved $65. Overall, disappointed with the service and expected better.
