I so badly wished I lived in Boston so this could be my go fabric, yarn, embroidery shop. I am obsessed. I’m sad I didn’t find the shop sooner because I would have loved to attend a class. The next time I come to Boston, I will so much better planning and working around their schedule so I can spend more time! Obsessed!!! Friendly staff!

I am being generous by giving 2 stars, in my opinion.
I took introductory knitting lessons this past weekend. I last knitted 35 years ago and as I am left-handed and it was difficult to learn because as we all know everything in this world is made for right-handed people. My instructor in NYC 35 years ago was able to teach me using my left hand. Fast forward to September 2024 and the Gather Here class. In Saturday’s class, the instructor told me specifically that knitting is done only 1 way! And that way is with my right hand and if I want to knit with my left hand than she (the instructor) can not and will not teach me. So there I was, absolutely struggling with my right hand. My stitches were terrible. I then decided to use my left hand and see if there was any “muscle memory “ which there was.
But to be told outright by the instructor that she can only teach me to knit 1 way is biased, rude and a complete waste of my $55 and my time. Shame on Gather Here in Cambridge, MA. I’m not sure if this is ageism (I am 69) or stupidity.

I’ve shopped here regularly since I moved to Boston six years ago but won’t be returning due to two run-ins now with their shady return policy. Gather Here claims to offer a fuller refund on items returned within 14 days of purchase and store credit for items returned within 30 days of purchase. I bought some yarn here on 8/3 at ~2:00pm and attempted to get a refund on 8/17 at 11:30am, but was told I hadn’t made the 14 day window. It had been 13 days and 21.5 hours, if you want to be technical about it. The woman working the counter tried to claim it had been 15 days and when I explained my math, she just ignored me and started helping the next person in line. I’ve shopped here over online yarn shops for years despite their prices being higher than what can be found online since they’re a small business, but this is ridiculous.

This place is so friendly and welcoming! Gather here offers sewing and emboidering classes for afforable price. They also offer open sewing hours to use their machines. I advice to call ahead or check website for availabilty for classes or studio time.
The bag class was a lot of fun. The pattern were easy to read and love pictures inside it. The staff answered questions and offered advice. I didn't finish it inside the class; but I managed to finish it on my own.

Adorable store. Staff has always been super friendly and the location can't be beat. As a sewer I go here for notions and trinkets, the fabric is overpriced for what it is (but I forgive them bc it's the cutest place in the world.)

This is the cutest shop, with the kindest and most helpful employees. I’d be in here every day if I could! They even do free local delivery to Cambridge and Somerville!

I adore this place. I learned how to sew here, one of my bucket list items. I now make my own clothes! Everyone who works here is lovely and so helpful and knowledgeable. Wonderful range of fabrics, yarns, patterns, etc. I also found renting machines/space & staff help was instrumental in my learning how to sew.

Pros: decent selection of “modern” quilt fabric and high quality yarn available for you to look at in person. Knowledgeable staff. Very focused on the beginner and entry level market especially with their classes. Also sells craft kits which are good gifts for entry level crafters for holidays/birthdays/etc. They also have restrooms for their customers.Cons: overpriced, often with products listed above manufacturer MSRP. Eg cocoknits sells their Makers board for $36 on their website, gather here sells it for $38. Many many fabric and yarn lines are similarly priced higher than other reputable small businesses charge. There’s also little in the way of classes or community opportunities for crafters who are not entry level and have familiarity with the craft. So if you’re already a good knitter or quilter, say, there’s not really much there for you.If you’re smart you’ll wait to do shopping here until their annual birthday sale in February, when prices actually drop down into the reasonable-or-better range. 2024 was 24% off fabric and yarn.Unfortunately the worst part is the owner/management seems to be rather petty and has multiple times posted passive aggressive complaints about customers on the store’s social media, which really isn’t a great look. Especially when they seem to be complaints about the store still requiring masks well into 2023 (and still requiring masks and proof of vaccination for classes in Feb 2024) or their objectively high prices- it would be better for them to just not say anything at all I feel. I’ve also heard of them deleting customer rewards accounts for sending in complaints with zero notice.
