Allow me to explain the "Best Buy protection plan" for people who aren't lawyers... when you buy a large appliance for example it usually comes with a year manufacturer's warranty. Best Buy sells a protection package for $199 (or $179) and they make it seem like it warranties you for 24 months. It does NOT. They charge your credit card an Additional $199 if you want to keep your membership past about 9 months. Otherwise they say your membership is "lapsed," and they don't cover ANYTHING and also don't refund a dime of your $199.
If they are able to charge your same credit card to auto renew and something happens in year 2 of owning the appliance you will have spent $400 already. But-- if you want to actually make a claim there is a $79 deductible you must pay to make a claim.
In other words- if your appliance stops working between 12-24 months you must spend $479 for the geek squad to do anything for you- and that could just be a repair!!!!
I found this all out when I went to make a claim on an appliance I bought in 2022 because it stopped working properly. (It was later than 12 months and under 24 months). I was told I needed to give them a credit card so that they could charge me for my second year of the total protection package. I pointed out that even on the receipt it says "24 months". Doesn't matter- read the fine print REALLY carefully and don't fall for the same trap I did! The total tech plan gives you NOTHING other than credit to haul away an old appliance. You are only covered by the manufacturers warranty for year 1. Then they keep charging your credit card each year $199 while they "auto renew." Luckily my credit card was expired and I didn't fall prey to this scam. I hope others can learn from my experience. I have no idea why businesses would purposely be so deceptive and lose a customer over these types of practices.
Contacted the BBB over this matter and corporate stands behind this. The lesson- never buy a protection plan unless you want 12 months of coverage for $479.
