We have been going to Family Pet for several years for our two dogs, Reba and Louis. We always have had such a great experience with the staff. Dr. Alvarez is knowledgeable, caring and treats our dogs like they’re hers. We are very appreciative!

My cats name is eyore and they drew a little picture of Eeyore the donkey last time he had an appointment. The people are so helpful and kind and all know him well.

We've had wonderful care from this clinic for more than 25 years, but the turnover in staff in the past five years and changes in ownership recently have been very disconcerting. It's certainly not the place it was several years ago.

I found this clinic through the great reviews here on Google and I was not disappointed in my time with them! I lived in Chicago for a year and a half and this was the clinic where I brought my two dogs and cat. It was always very easy to schedule an appointment and the wait time was very short. In June, my 10 year old dog suddenly passed away in my home. I brought her to the clinic but she was already gone. Stella was so sincere and comforted me like we had known each other for years. I didn’t have any family in Chicago and she was literally a shoulder for me to cry on. When I came back a few weeks later to get my dog’s fur clippings, she again was so sweet and her kindness meant the world to me. I will never forget Stella because that kind of care and sincerity can change someone’s day and really give them comfort in a bad time.I want to thank her again and all the staff for taking care of my babies and treating me so well. Service like this is so appreciated and hard to find. Do not hesitate to make this your vet. They will take great care of you and your fur babies.

If you are new to Family Pet, you won't know the difference. All of us who have been there from the begininng, have seen the changes in the last couple of years and it is just not the same. Thank goodness Jim is still there, he is the only one from the days where it really was FAMILY PET! It is not the same, not the same feeling and after 20+ years I am sadly done. PLEASE CHANGE THE NAME to THRIVE so that is VERY CLEAR. I was just in there yesterday and it was dim- turn the lights on, maybe? Nothing personal feeling in there- sterile. The one item that made it feel like days past is the cat mail holder that has been there forever. Bye Bye Family Pet- I'm officially on the hunt for a new vet.

Very disappointed. We wanted to take our cat back to family pet because she is still dealing with the same skin issue as when we last took her there. My husband left work early to drive an hour home and then an hour back to family pet and he encountered traffic. I’m not sure how late he was but it was 15 minutes past the appointment time when he called to tell me he was turned away. I understand the need for profession boundaries but this is cruel to our cat. She is absolutely miserable. I own a retail store and I stay late all the time. She just needed a quick look at her skin and a better cone and some different ointment than whatever they gave her before. Family pet had wonderful care I know because we have spent thousands of dollars there. I like rules. I like boundaries but man maybe just see the freaking cat and charge a late fee or something? 2 hours in the car in the middle of the summer for this poor cat. Punish me for your precious 15 minutesnot the cat.***response from owner was acceptable until the mention that the choice to turn us away was in the best interest of the cats health care. This was one of the hottest days of the year which probably in some way contributed to the amount of traffic that made us less than 15 minutes late. It was obviously one of if not the last appointment of the day. If you want to tell me that you turned us away for the health of your employees and business, this is probably accurate. She suffered several more days and for the same price that we received only antibiotic ointment and a cone from family pet, she got labs, an oral antibiotic, anti fungal medicine, probiotic, dewormer, medicated shampoo, anti-itch spray and gabapentin to calm her down when she was trying to chew herself past the cone. You are only correct in the sense that she IS getting better health care from somewhere else because of your decision to turn her away.

Google deleted my other review but let me say this. This is the place to go to if you think spending more money = greater care. Now that this beloved family practice has been bought by private equity (the "Thrive" in the name) and a majority of the doctors replaced, expect even worse service for even higher cost. This place used to be awesome and they're coasting on reputation, but this won't last. After recent events I cannot conscionably recommend coming here as their values, mission, and service have strayed and devolved. It is now a well-below average practice with well-above average costs. Add in the new, inexperienced, uncaring doctors and you've got an obvious AVOID! This is what happens when you chase profit over care.EDIT: Thanks for the response but there's no chance I will use Family Pet again nor stop recommending people avoid it at all costs, unless they buy themselves out from Thrive and pretty much completely replace the doctors and staff. The doctors are condescending and judgmental and the staff are flaky and don't follow up. I'm tired of getting forced into expensive treatments that my pet doesn't need, and judging by other comments this is a common problem. Every interaction doesn't need to be an upsell. I am currently in the process of finding a different veterinarian and hope they are more caring and have better customer service skills.

UPDATE: Thank you to Melissa for quickly following up and offering a good solution in the end. Not everyone would have done that, and I appreciate the communication and service. We were given heartworm and flea/tick medication during our appointment without being given the option of having a prescription sent out to another pharmacy. An hour later, after researching the price elsewhere (which was $118 cheaper), I was told I could not return pre-packaged, unopened boxes. I really wish I had been asked where to fill these preventative prescriptions rather than just being handed the meds and charged. Disappointing customer experience overall.

It is with a heavy heart and sadness that I'm not rating Family Pet with 5 stars. Have been going to Family Pet for years and years. They have been phenomenal in the past! I RATE THE STAFF AT A 5!! YOU ARE ALL FANTASTIC!! Dr Jane Lohmar, who is now retired (happy for Jane...sad for myself and my pooch!) Jane was by far the best vet I have ever had the pleasure to have taking great care of all of my dogs!! It seems that, unfortunately, with the new corporate ownership, and with new vets, some of the top notch assessment and care may very well be slipping.... I'm not giving up on Family Pet... But, am now very cautious. Had a stressful experience with new vet advising that my 10 year old puggle had X type of mass that is usually malignant...then 15 minutes later advised was a different type of mass... THEN after cells from mass sent to lab, lab results said it was a DIFFERENT TYPE OF GROWTH. I'm sure the new vet meant well...yet, hearing different diagnoses on a growth, within a short time period doesn't engender a sense of trust in a vet that I prefer to have. Additionally, I would be remiss if I didn't note that the prices have skyrocketed!!! There is a charge of $19.50 applied for going into the vet... huh??? Odd. Again, not giving up on Family Pet...but may have to if continue to see the high prices with the lower level of veterinarian assessment....

Cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Alvarez! She took time to carefully examine our dog, give honest and direct feedback as well as her expert opinion on whether or not to medicate our erratic lab. After previous less than stellar experiences with our prior vet, I was super impressed by Dr. Alvarez’s professionalism, guidance and genuine concern for our canine child. Front desk was also super helpful and able to get us in that same week!

I have been going to Family Pet for 20 plus years throughout 3 beloved animals lives. They recently sold to Thrive and I wanted to give them a chance to prove they could be as good as the previous vets. Boy was I wrong! I've given them 3 shots and all were the same experience. Zero follow up, no detailed notes or instructions on my checkout paperwork. No follow up phone call or any sort of compassion. The worst part for me was it felt cold and incomplete like it was a factory. Also, they charged and astronomical amount of $744 bucks without a CBC! I have no problem paying for good veterinarian care but this was not good! It wasn't even okay, It was AWFUL! All the original staff that had been there for years minus one VMD is gone. BEWARE!

If I could give Family Pet Animal Hospital more stars I would! The staff and doctors really care about pets! I have an elderly cat and Dr. Guzina did a fantastic job explaining her condition to me and answering all my questions. While most veterinarians only want the best for our pets, I found that Family Pet went above and beyond. They are realistic but encouraging, especially since my cat is 17. Highly recommend them!!

Family Pet Animal Hospital is actually Thrive Pet Healthcare, a nationwide network of veterinary clinics. They buy clinics but do not change the name. I went to Family Pet for nearly 20 years. They were great. The last couple of years I was there all the doctors started leaving. My current Vet told me that Family Pet was bought out. She explained the whole scenario that went down. I prefer to go to a private practice rather than a chain. You may want to look up Thrive Pet Healthcare on the Better Business Bureau and read their reviews. Their rating is 1.12 out of 5.
