Asked him to file S-Corp paperwork for my business for the 2020 tax season, then I was unable to get a copy of it despite multiple emails and phone calls. His assistant finally replied to an email saying he had filed it and gave me the date but never a copy of the paperwork. Needless to say 2 years later the IRS sent me a letter saying that I had been filing as an S-Corp for 2020, 2021 and 2022 and I was not an S-Corp. My current accountant did everything they could to back date it given that my previous accountant had lied to me. Now a year later I owe a 5k penalty for filing the wrong paperwork. All could have been avoided if this accountant had just told me he forgot file the S-Corp originally. As a small business an unexpected 5k bill is detrimental. I wish I could hold them accountable for this.
