“One of the most versatile and modern churches with authentic love for people. Shows in the hospitality, the pastor and current up-to-date music talent. Exciting enthusiasm is in every message and encouragement is felt throughout. Highly recommended (after visiting many) this is my choice for spiritual food and fellowship.”

“My husband and I are both active duty and were looking for a doula for the birth of second son. We’d read a dozen books, attended birth courses, joined birth groups, etc. We reached out to Katja at Best Birth Hawaii. We really vibed with Erin and were stoked she was available to help us bring him into this world. She lived in the same area of the island and had a great perspective on birth. A lot of people asked why we would pay to have a doula and many more had questions on what they do. I’ll say this, at the end of the day we would have paid double! Erin is a badass and the best person to have in your corner whether you’re having a home or hospital birth. She helped us progress labor at home, came with a bag of tricks when she arrived at our home, coached us once we got to the hospital, advocated for us once there, played defense on an OB who was hoping to knock out a C-section, and even took some pictures since we couldn’t have a photographer (COVID restrictions). She’s strong, confident, experienced, professional, and knowledgeable. Mahalo Katja for having a great resource for birthing women and mahalo nui loa Erin for being part of our birth story!”

“Nestled amidst the lush windward landscape, the Byodo-In Temple stands as an oasis, a replica of the 950-year-old Byodoin Temple in Uji, Japan. Yet, unlike the quietude of its ancient counterpart, this temple hums with the energy of its numerous visitors. As I walked through the verdant gardens, the air was vibrant with the mingling scents of tropical flowers and the earthy musk of the pond's koi and black swan. The fiery red of the temple's intricate structure reflected in the calm pond, the golden hues of the Buddha statue casting a warm glow, and the verdant green of the trees whispering stories of old. However, tranquility was often overpowered by the cacophony of the crowd. The temple bell, intended for a soft call to mindfulness, rang out with a fervor that bordered on the theatrical, as if announcing the start of a circus show. It's a jarring contrast to the intended peace, transforming what should be a meditative experience into a spectacle of sorts.Despite the din, there were moments of serenity to be found. In a quiet corner, omikuji fortunes fluttered in the wind, tied to the branches of a sacred tree, their silent prayers undisturbed. A cat basked in a patch of sunlight, a living embodiment of contentment amidst the chaos. In these pockets of calm, the true spirit of Byodo-In could be felt. It's a place that beckons the soul to seek stillness, even when the world around is anything but. And so, my review is twofold: come for the beauty, the culture, and the history, but be prepared for the crowds that turn solitude to spectacle.”

“Makakilo Bible Church turned Hawaii from being a surprisingly dark place for our family to being incredibly beautiful. The teaching of and faithfulness to the word of God is the best on island and the matching discipleship of ages children through adults second to none. Having lived all over the globe, we can attest to the rarity of finding churches like MBC where solid "orthodoxy" meets practical "orthopraxy".”

“Grazioso laghetto di fronte al tempio Byodo-in, dalle calme acque nelle quali nuotano placidamente molti pesci. Percorrerne il perimetro trasmette un senso di pace e di relax, favorito dall’ambientazione circostante, ideata per favorire la meditazione personale e per riconciliare la mente al corpo. Un momento di rilassamento che aiuta.”

“The Kawaiahao Church was the very first Christian church to be built in these Hawaiian islands. The church members naturally stand up for and champion many local Hawaiian issues. This magnificent church ediface is primarily built with local ocean coral blocks. It once was and still is an awe inspiring structure. The last remaining ruling queen, Queen Lilioukalani, a strong, devoted Christian and her family attended church here.”

“Our "Common Ground(s)," I believe, are discernable. Yes. Here in Hawaii, we represent very different religious beliefs. This is a very clear, undeniable fact. However, inspite of these undisputed issues, personally, I submit, that we share some spiritual matters, across our faiths, in common as well as many key humanitarian viewpoints. Dad and Mom recognized them and fully embraced this rich diversity. I will carefully endeavor to illustrate and highlight our many common perspectives, not dwell on our differences. And, you may ask, "What is an unmistakable Japanese castle doing standing in the middle of the Makiki community in Honolulu, Hawaii?" You will be amazed to discover, that the answer is very simple. The church founders, who came from Kochi, Japan, built the church structure and sanctuary, based upon popular church hymns like "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." And, this church design is an exact, although somewhat smaller, replica of the Kochi castle, in Kochi City, on the island of Shikoku, one of the four prominent islands, which make up Japan.Allow me then, to tackle these rich, amazing local historical and cultural realities as well as fascinating diversity.”
