I did alot of research into what rental car company to use when in Kauai (there’s alot of scary reviews out there!). I’m so glad I chose Alamo. Overall the experience was great.
Picking up rental car from Alamo Lihue Airport:
Upon arrival at the airport after collecting bags, follow the signs to “rental car” and you end up on the median strip waiting for the shuttle bus. All the rental company shuttles will stop here. The free “Alamo/Enterprise” branded shuttle takes people directly to where the office is. Only a few minutes drive, but definitely don’t try walking it. There’s no pedestrian footpaths or gates etc. just roads that lead to it.
Our experience:
When we arrived, there weren’t any lines. We were first in line. The lady who served us was friendly and she checked if we wanted any extra add ons (CDW and Liability was included already but we added roadside assistance). She also checked our drivers licenses and signed the rental contract. We then took this paperwork to a lady outside who then advised us which cars we could pick from. There’s lines of cars grouped into classes. We booked a compact but there weren’t any. So we ended up with a mid sized car. There’s plenty of cars to choose from. I suggest you walk over and check which one is the best condition. Takes lots of photos/videos to cover yourself. The key was in ignition. After picking the car, we then drove it to the exit where a boomgate is. A lady asked us if we are happy with the condition of the car, if we have Qs and if we have taken our photos/videos. When we said yes, we could leave.
The car was great. It worked as it should. It was clean. It had a full tank of fuel. We filled it ourselves before returning it. We kept the receipt but weren’t asked to show it.
For the return, we just followed the “rental car return” signs and then “alamo” and we drove and parked in these bays behind other returned cars. A lady then checked the car over. And she then let us know the charge would be processed. I then got an email confirming that the charge was processed and I don’t owe money. We then took the free Alamo/Enterprise shuttle bus back to the airport terminal.
Honestly such an easy process! I was kinda expecting something to go wrong or be difficult, but nothing did thankfully.
FYI: Any Australians reading this, you don’t actually need an international drivers license if you hire a car with Alamo. Unsure if you would need one if the Police pulled you over. But apparently in Hawaii one isn’t required if your license is in English.

The set up on the app was very simple and easy to use .
The service at the counter for picking up the car was very quick .
We returned the vehicle and that part was so easy we were done in minutes.
I would highly recommend using Alamo for my future car rental needs .

Easy reservation and best rate through Costco Travel, check in quick without being grilled to add coverages, dependable mid-size car and quick return to get to flight.

Easiest rental car experience in a while - skipping the line is a game changer. I hope everyone coming to the island looks up the rental car companies ahead of time, because choosing the wrong one can ruin your whole day. Luckily, we went with Alamo after reading the reviews, and we were not disappointed at all! We could skip the line and pick our car from the lot. The Hyundai Tuscon we picked out was clean and worked great, with about 15k miles on it. Drop-off was a breeze and the shuttle driver is friendly.

We used Alamo on our trip to Kauai, Hawaii. We reserved a mustang convertible, we chose skip the counter, and everything went smoothly. We were in and out of the facility in under 10 minutes. The only exceptions with the vehicle was the car was to low to the ground. We are seniors which getting in and out was challenging to say the least.
We returned the car and exchanged for a Nissan Rogue which was an acceptable change, very nice car, however a few miles into the ride the dashboard idiot lights and messaging systems gave a engine red light warning to service vehicle immediately, it was losing power, so we returned it the same day.
They were very understanding that we had another issue. And immediately help us to get into a Nissan Pathfinder which was a class step up. They did not upcharge for this upgrade. This vehicle was wonderful way better than the first two.
They saved us about a hundred dollars over our original reservation. We were very happy with the quick response and resolution to our unfortunate issues.
Will definitely use alamo car rental for our future rentals.

Check in at Alamo RAC at Lihue was very simple. They offer pre-check in to bypass the line. Pick your go, check it out and go. Even when the local Alamo office notified us of a recall, exchanging the vehicle was easy and fast.

We rented out a Camaro convertible for our week in Kauai. We had delays and landed late. The desk clerk was great and we were on our way to pick out the car in no time. It was right at closing time and there were 2 convertibles to choose from, the other being a mustang. I wish I would have asked how the top went down before leaving, but figured it out the next day. We thoroughly enjoyed cruising the island with the top down. Thanks!
