We have had our 3 dogs with Southington Vet for 8 years. In the beginning this facility was awesome. The last 3 years after they changed ownership things have went downhill. Doctors left. The staff at the front end are all new. Was always curious on why that happened. Well now we know. Seems all this place want to do is your basic animal maintenance. Physical, shots, nail clippings etc… Like Jiffy Lube. Every time our dogs need some extra care they always told us to call or take the dog to the ER or they’re too busy. Which is strange because there was never any vehicles in the parking lot when we would drive by. They wouldn’t even see our dog. Shameful!!! A month ago we had to bring one of our dogs to the ER. She had rash/hives and vomiting. Wasn’t that serious but better safe than sorry. She is healthy. Just an allergic reaction to something. Gave her a shot some anti-nauseous medicine and within a day and a half she was back to normal. Couple days ago she had the same thing just a lot less severe. we called Southington vet and asked them to look at the records to see if they can give her the same medicines that the ER did. They said no you have to bring her to the ER. Never even wanted to see her. I don’t know about you, but the emergency room visit is a lot more expensive than going to see your local vet. So I asked to speak to the manager and they said he will get back to me the following day, which he did but is only concerned was letting us know that there’s nothing they could have done. They only had one doctor in the building, no cars were at the facility when I went down. He didn’t even ask how our animal was doing. Shameful. They don’t care about your animal. All they care about is the quick dollar. Find another veterinarians office is my suggestion.

Run, don’t walk, away from this place if you love your pet. If, on the other hand you want your dog euthanized for a simple, treatable diagnosis, by all means call them! My Moose, a 16-year-old Maltipoo I’ve had since he was 4 months old, had suddenly taken ill. Symptoms were lethargy, loss of balance, strength and appetite. This could be end-of-life stuff, but it could also be an ear infection. A nurse-friend had asked if I had an otoscope as it was probably exactly that, an ear infection. I did not.
The morning after these symptoms came on I made an appointment at Southington Vet where I had taken the dogs for routine matters in the past. Dr. Thoreau (NOT very thorough-Don’t miss the play on words ?) did a cursory exam and offered to put Moose down based on no findings (He failed to look in his ears, which would have screamed “infection” had he looked, considering he had systemic symptoms already!) and the fact that Moose was old. I asked if there was a chance of his recovering and he said “no”. I was unable to make the wrap my head around losing my friend, especially since it had been less than 24 hours since he appeared sick for the first time, and declined the offer, hoping Moose would pass on his own when he was ready. I cried throughout the entire appointment. Dr. T was very sympathetic. The next morning I noticed that Moose’ ear was crunchy. He had a ton of drainage that had hardened on his outer ear. An ear infection!!!! The nurse was right! I treated the infection the first night with garlic marinated in olive oil, the same that I did for my children growing up. The next day he was already showing signs of improvement and gratitude, and he ate and followed me around the way he always did. That night I cleaned the ear with apple cider vinegar and, believe it or not, had some antibacterial otic drops which I put in his ear. The next morning, more improvement.
The story gets better.
I called the office to tell them that their doctor was willing to kill my dog for an ear infection, because he had missed the diagnosis. They said it was his day off and they would not bother him, and that the doctor on that day was already double-booked and could not see me. They suggested that I should go to am emergency clinic ($$$$$$$$). I told them I had already paid for medical care, which Moose did not get, and that they needed to call the doc who missed the diagnosis and get Moose the medication he needed. They refused to provide any appropriate care/actions, despite the fact that a patient was suggesting that malpractice had been committed , and the number one risk management tactic is to respond to an upset patient (Or their mom).
So Dr. T wanted to kill my dog for a missed diagnosis of an ear infection, and they would not own their mistake. I got the dogs’ records and will be finding another Veteranarian. I am still shaking my head. ?♀️

I have been going to this vet for years and have had decent experiences with all my dogs until my last 2 visits. In November my puppy had kennel cough and was put on meds and everything. 2 weeks later, my other dog started to have the same symptoms. I called the vet hoping to just get meds seeing how kennel cough is very contagious and they live in the same house.. but nope let me pay two $400 vet bills instead of just one. I took both dogs for their annual this year which usually costs me 300-$400 per dog... NOPE this time was $1,200.00 for both dogs!! I couldn't believe it. Not only the cost but my one year old pup is the sweetest and a very shy boy. Apparently when they took him to get his blood drawn in the back he was so scared he pooped all over the table and was rolling to get away from them.. so they muzzled him and threaten to sedate him every vet visit moving forward for their safety. I insisted that he is not aggressive and was probably scared of you so to please let me come back with him moving forward. I held him for the rest of his shots and he was not aggressive what's so ever towards the vet or tech. THEY ALSO SENT HIS POOP FROM THE TABLE IN FOR TESTING AND CHARGED ME WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. Both of my dogs were terrified throughout their visit. I will definitely be finding a new vet!!

It was my first experience with them and I found them to be quite caring for my pup , a super friendly staff greeted me and my pup. The vet tech was very helpful. Dr. Dave attended to my pup and answered all my questions in laymans terms. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a great vet at a reasonable price.
