I have never received such abysmal care from a hospital provider, until now. I am not certain what has changed in the philosophy of care at Porter, but I would not elect to have surgery at this facility again, until I knew there had been substantial changes made. There was not continuity of care. I had spinal surgery, unfortunately not my first. The nurses did not communicate, literally standing outside of my room, as I was in tears, saying”there is nothing else I can do for her” as it relates to my pain. I had to prompt the nursing staff to call my surgeon or the “pain management” doctor, a doctor with whom, I had no prior care. I was informed my pain management was PRN; pain management is suppose to be proactive not reactive. I was told I needed to eat, when I called to order my food, I was informed no one had entered my restrictions, and was told to wait. Furthermore, when I informed Marleen who was taking the food orders that I had a severe allergy to mushrooms, she laughed and stated “how allergic can you really be” when I informed her I was epi pen allergic, she said a nurse needed to input that information. The most alarming part is a hospital employee in food service actually questioned and scoffed at my allergy. I absolutely love my surgeon, and have nothing but the highest praise and admiration for him. The hospital staff from food service to nursing was gobsmacking. I am traumatized; I shudder to think what happens to people who don’t know how to advocate for themselves. The PT, OT and the entire preoperative staff and the CNA Claudia were wonderful, her beside manner was better than the nursing staff of my first day in hospital after surgery.

Upon my first attempt here no one told me to stop taking my blood pressure medications and in fact I was told I could continue them when I never have before. I went into O.R. and almost died because my BP dropped to 50/00. Surgery was stopped and life saving measures got me through. A week and a half later a second attempt was made with medications stopped and surgery went off without a hitch.
From pre-op to check in to check out, everyone was professional and caring. They knew their jobs and did them well. Everyone came in to pre-op to visit with me and family members with confidence and knew what was going on. They stayed in touch with family during surgery and gave timely accurate updates. All around, considering the circumstances it was an experience with an overall good out come and would recommend this hospital and its personnel to everyone.
One pre-op nurse ruined the BP part of the first attempt and resulting near death experience and one nurse ruined the table positioning as mentioned below that may have permanent damages to my shoulder.
The second negative issue that happened twice in the last two O.R. Visits with positioning me on the table that injured my shoulder even after telling O.R. personnel multiple times prior to anesthesia, it still happened and now I have a damaged shoulder to deal with. Could be serious but time will tell I guess.

The nurses and staff who took care of me were wonderful. Compassionate, empathetic - I felt like they cared for me as if I was their own grandmother. The surgical staff were excellent.

I tried to check in but I honestly don't know if I was even in the right place. The security guards seemed angry that I was there, if that is the front reception area.... it needs WORK because I'm not entering through doors that scary. I can't find the front entrance. That can't be the way everyone checks in. That's scary. All I wanted was for someone to look at this breast lump! I've been trying everywhere and I am terrified and I don't like being afraid to even go through the front doors. I had questions that were sensitive and I wanted to talk to someone before figuring out if I was even going to be allowed in.
And please don't have scary uniformed officials approach someone sitting on their phones. This place is literally terrifying. Is this how all city ERs are? I'm not from here but where I grew up ERs had doctors and stuff. This place seems like a prison.

AdventHealth Porter Hospital is a wonderful hospital and the GI Lab is probably the best GI Lab in the Denver metro area! Highly recommend for colonoscopy as well any advanced upper endoscopy needs. Nursing staff in the GI lab are the best!!!

I had spine surgery at Porter and felt confident, supported, and listened to every step of the way! My nurse, Angela, was awesome and tried to help me in anyway she could! The entire surgical team was great - I felt confident in them all and knew they would do a great job with the procedure. They were empathetic and helped to calm me when my nerves kicked in.

I had successful surgery here but they almost literally tried to shove the bible down my throat. There was a person who stopped by before my surgery so I could pray/confess to her or whatever, that was absolutely disgusting. Another bizarre thing: while you're getting prepped for the surgery they play quotes from the bible on the speaker every 30 minutes or so. Imagine thinking that you came for a procedure based purely on factual scientific research and then realizing that you're in the "hands of god" here. I really think you guys should stop at placing statues of biblical figures in the lobby, that's more than enough.
