We came here for some supplies as we are camping in the area. This place sells everything you can think of. The meat department is packed and the butcher's know what they are doing. The staff was nice and acted professionally. We were able to get everything we were looking for and a few things we didn't, but picked up anyway.

Our favorite grocery store. Excellent butcher, great deli, good general selection of groceries. Also a nice local feeling place. They have a lot of interesting specialty and local items hidden away here and there; Bubba's Bagels, Sierra Sweets toffee. Finally motivated to write a review by an experience I just had where some equipment malfunctioned and I got overcharged. I noticed the problem and went back in and the manager handed me a cash refund on the spot, no hassle, no paperwork, just "yes we made a mistake let me fix it". I appreciate that sort of trust and honest business.

Very sad to see people wandering without masks. Like no where to be seen. And the bagger had a mask below his nose.

I have no problem with the market itself, quality of produce and meat/butcher counter is good. My complaint is the rude, arrogant checker at the Nevada City store ("Tom"?). This is the 2nd time I've been in his line and both times he was very unfriendly. I wrote it off the first time to "maybe he's having a rough day" but I think he just shouldn't be working in a job situation where he deals with the public.
Unlike every other store in the area where cashiers and baggers go out of their way to say hi, thanks, have a good day, etc., he doesn't acknowledge the customer in any way.
This time around I bought a nice prime rib and veggies/dinner makings for Christmas which this moron proceeded to roll/bounce down the counter towards the bagger. (The roast was unwrapped/packaging torn when I took, it out of the bag at home and a few other items were bruised and mushy.)
I left the store and then noticed that he hadn't given me a receipt. When I returned and asked him if he gave me a receipt (thinking it could be at the bottom of one of the bags) he said "you didn't ask for a receipt" in a rude tone. I said that I didn't know I needed to ask for one and it seemed like he felt it was common knowledge by the way he reacted. Apparently my asking for a receipt was causing him a great deal of effort, more rudeness towards me at that point along with condescending attitude towards the bagger.
I like to support the "neighborhood" businesses but I think in this case I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

FYI: for all of you who keep saying this is a great family owned market. It is a employee owned market. The employees bought it several years ago.

I forgot to mention, the presumably gay white guy with ear piercings and a bad attitude deliberately coughed on me when I leaned over to put my groceries on the belt. I understand if you don't like me because I'm cut from a different cloth from you, but coughing on people during a pandemic is a serious felony. I have a feeling that this guy has nothing to lose and going to prison might actually be an upgrade to his current miserable existence. This place has really gone downhill, just like the rest of America, especially California. I wish they had a self-checkout so I could avoid scumbags like this. Most of the other employees are perfectly fine, but this guy is such a lowlife, and despite how Jeff Bezos is, I think I will buy everything online from now on.

We are appalled at the number of people with no masks and no respect for social distancing in your stores. Checkout person said you don’t enforce mask policy because of fear of violence. Hire some off duty cops and save our lives. 70s age customers. Afraid we won’t be coming in until you change your environment. Too bad because you are good at lot of things vs your COMPETITORS.

Locally owned. Always friendly service. Great selection. Both stores are great! I've been shopping at SPD since I first moved here in the late 70's.

This place is awful!! They hire these young kids who are just starting out in life and then they crush them by firing them for no reason. The best part is they fire them and then want them to work another day. That's new to me. I will never shop her again and if you are a young person do not apply here!! Or don't let your kids apply here!! They fired three or more kids that I knew of in just a little over a month my daughter was there. They don't give the proper training as well. They just expect these young kids to know everything. They should be ashamed!!! This is for the grass valley store.

SPD Grass Valley did a fabulous job of my curbside delivery order. They beat their 2 day estimate by 1 day and I got everything I ordered. Pickup was also a breeze. They have a couple of spaces right in front of the store. And they don't charge for this service!

Very rude woman working in the deli, complains to the customers how tired and overworked she is, horrible scowl on her face, looks like she's would make a model cast member in the Stephen King movie. Never friendly unless the one man who works there happens to be on the same shift - then it is like the strange case of Jekyll and Hyde - where in his presence, she can't stop flirting and giggling and joking around with him and in the most "delightful" mood. Kind of spooky. Watch out if you come in the store while she is alone in the deli and he is on a break or has a day off - it's not a pretty sight. Sort of like Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction - on a bad day. Do yourself a favor and try to meal plan in advance before ending up in this potential horror movie star's domain.

Great family owned market that I frequented when living in Grass Valley and still frequent when I'm in the area. The market is a bit outdated with and old school foothills vibe. It's a bit dusty in places and you can definitely tell it's been here awhile. The staff are very friendly and willing to assist. They have a good selection of products and what looks like a good meat / seafood counter. There are also other items such as fishing gear and disc golf discs in the back of the store. The fact that they support the local disc golf scene is very cool and part of the reason I go out of my way when I'm in town. They usually have a great stock and wide variety of plastic to look through so if your into disc golf, this is a hidden gem. I would consider this a local market and not solely a grocery store, it caters to the surrounding lifestyle of the gold country. Local history that's worth the stop if your in town.

My favorite market in the area. Some of their prices are a little bit higher than chain markets but SPD has great specials, interesting foods and an easy going atmosphere that make up for it. Good seafood and meat counter. Nice produce including a good organic section. And you can buy oil for your chainsaw or nuts and bolts if need be.
