My experience with this agency was very combative to say the least. both the class 1representative and his superior were very rude and unprofessional. class1 representative flat out told me that shop i took my car to "did not have to give me a written estimate before performing repair work on my car? wow. class1 rep "how very ignorant of you to say this to me. when it is written your law the state law..clown..even went so far as to not be respectful and reversed my name, when i corrected the clown he refused to correct himself, continued to be disrespectful and aggressive towards me...by the way i owned a car dealership and auto repair shop as well, he seemed to be very surprised and then became frustrated when he feed me the bullshit he was trying to tell about unwritten estimate. there's more, however in my opinion this agency falls short if you know your rights, law, female and a prior owner they will become unglued. i only went to these so-called government folks due to severity of damage done to my car of almost $8,000 and possible counting to document wise autotech in berkeley california. and by the way this piece of cau-cau thought he was mr.slick doing a valve job on my car and f-cked it up . then couldn't figure out how to work on my trunk acuator..which is why my car was there in the first place. beware! a so-called mechanic does not have female hands and is not he himself free of oil..go play with your children a-hole, because with me you f-cked around and found out. by the way you tampered with my dashcam and drove all of the gas out my car of almost $100.00 and had the audacity to tell me you only went around the corner? even if you took it for a test drive you should have put gas back. i also am missing video footage off my dashcam which will be further investigated. needless to say the digital footprint on my car from the time the sensors shut down to the time i got my car back from you 87 miles my car had been driven with a very badly damaged dme box..the brain of my car..which is the reason why dummy you couldn't get the check engine light off..stupid.

When I called they went over everything they could do to help like I was in the right hands. But all they did was voice my complaint to the business and then repeat the Business's reply to my complaint. ALL OF THAT WAS DONE BEFORE CALLING BAR. That was the point. My rep folded like a wet puppy . Maybe it works if you can't speak English because all they do is repeat what you say. Major Fail, Don't waste your time, small claims court it is

Bureau of Automotive Repair is a toothless Chihuahua, and a waste of time. It seems to be a buffer and warning post for unscrupulous automotive operators. I am actually digging to see if they are anything more than a Chamber of Commerce for Auto businesses. I was told in beginning that there was a lot they can do but they seemed to only visit the offending repair shop, maybe said 'hello' and closed the case. There is 'No bite' at all, despite the 'front' displayed by various podcasts or videos on YouTube. Why woud you pay them 275. to appear in court. Why would you pay for subpoenaed documents? They refuse to even tell the plaintiff what they have done on his/her behalf. Total BS in my view! There's more but seems no-one uses them to any good effect anyway!

This service is a good concept but, unfortunately, they are pretty powerless. They mediate between you and the shop you are having trouble with. Ultimately you are at the mercy of the shop. If it has an ethical and responsible owner (you probably wouldn't need BAR), BAR helps you sway them to take responsibility for mistakes or bad work. If you are dealing with a crook, you pretty much have to take him to court. I had problems with two shops. One installed the incorrect part in my car and the other misdiagnosed my car. One shop has either an incompetent or crook as an owner and the other didn't want to take a loss for misdiagnosing. The idiot/crook didn't take responsibility and the second shop gave me half a refund after I called BAR. Honestly, the very experienced agent, whom I only spoke to on the phone, seemed more like a social worker to me than an enforcer. I had little faith in him after he dealt with the crook and pretty much got laughed at. I thought I had more training with crooks growing up in the hood than him so I tried to get my own refund with the second shop. He told me I was due a refund because he misdiagnosed my car. I contacted the owner and asked him for a refund. He didn't want to. I told him I was calling BAR. He didn't seem to be concerned, so I did. The agent helped me recover almost half a refund, which was good because it was not a cheap job.
