Expect decent quality and variety of most grocery items, produce was a little old when I went, but not expired completely. The staff was helpful and kind. Very pricey, but glad to have a grocery store option close to my house. Store was clean.

This is for the Annex only. The wine shop specifically. They don't seem to want to sell standard-faire basic (but good) varietals such as sauv blanc, pinot noir, merlot, etc. Most of what they carry are European varietals and unfamiliar, which is fine, but when I ask for recommendations for what I'm looking for I end up with $25+ bottles which taste weird, overly minerally, not crisp as promised, you name it. Once I told the wine monger I don't like deep yellow whites and he seemed surprised that the appearance of the wine would be a deal killer for me. Do they know wine at all? Much better bet to schlep up to the wine shop on Arlington in Kensington.

My wife and I call this the "Ripoff Store" because the prices dwarf those of Whole Foods.Their trail mix is $22 per pound. You read that right: $22 per pound!!!The meat spoils super fast so definitely don't buy meat there. And their bread is terrible.Go to Whole Foods instead... you'll get better quality at much better pricesGreat staff however.Very good hot bar. But they need to offer Shepherd's Pie in bulk more often. If it's not in bulk, it's $8 for a tiny little serving. And their meatloaf is like $20 a pound. For meatloaf?!?Again... "ripoff store"

It’s a great place. There’s a lot of kombucha and a lot of chocolate., everyone’s really friendly and the bulk food section has many fun and exciting surprises for the average shopper.

Poor customer service from cashiers especially Pabi in Gilman St location. Please offer to help bag groceries especially when it is busy. Also please don't start checking out next person in line while present person is still packing their bags! This causes a lot of confusion as everyone's purchases get all mixed up in bagging area. This store would have better cashiers if they paid a decent wage.

Great Organic Produce/ Meats. I felt kind of weird with the death stare from the older Latina lady at the register and her passive aggressiveness. I hope you have a better day.

I want to love this place so bad. The butcher's counter is AMAZING -- such a great selection of wonderful, pastured and humanely raised meat. For specialty dairy (A2) and baking ingredients (gluten-free flours, sugar substitutes, fine chocolate etc) ECNG is also FAB. But the area in which they should excel -- the produce! because that's the establishment's raison d'etre, it's a PRODUCE MARKET!-- consistently disappoints. First, the vegetables are insanely expensive in comparison to similar small-scale competitors like Monterey Market. (Example: you can buy the exact same brand of organic Maitake mushrooms at the Japanese grocery a couple of blocks away for less than half of what ECNG wants for them.) Second, and the main problem in my view for the asking price: the vegetables are not good quality. Let's take broccoli as an example. I eat raw finely diced broccoli a lot. The first time I discovered brown rot-like muck hidden in the crevices of the florets of ECNG's organic broccoli, I was bummed -- after all, I'd paid $4.99 a pound! -- but I put it down to a fluke. The second time I found the brown fungus (or rot?), I attributed it to our very wet winter last year, which can promote fungal growth on broccoli. But EVERY. TIME. I'VE BOUGHT BROCCOLI from this market for the last six months, I've found these spots. So I started to go out of my way to buy broccoli at Monterey Market or Berkeley Bowl instead -- some of which was coming from the exact same supplier, or at least from the same organic brand. And I have not had any problem with the broccoli from those places -- so it's clearly NOT just because of the weather or whatever. Something is wrong with the produce supply chain at ECNG: the vegetables they're getting are inferior. Anyway, as I said above, I like the dairy and baking options here, and I really REALLY love the butcher. But for produce, I am vowing right now to take the extra time to go to Monterey Market or Berkeley Bowl. And I'm chucking almost three pounds of ridiculously pricey broccoli that my husband brought home yesterday, because once again, there is fungus or rot in it, and I am fortunate enough to live near places where, as soon as I hit "publish" on this review, I can go buy better, cheaper broccoli.

I've come here for at least a decade. I also shop at dozens of other store. Thisnis the best grocery store I the Bay Area. Not to big, rarely busy, the most attentive staff, the most natural grocery. They do special orders as needed and prioritize the customer. The store is always clean as well. And there are quality local produce.

Welcoming people, good service. Limited choice and still plenty. Great meat. Better atmosphere than Berkeley bowl.

The meat department has very testy and bad-tempered men! They will snap and seem unhappy with their jobs. Hate going there! Are you reading this management?

The people who work here are so nice and patient. My kids were acting crazy inside the store and I was clearly overwhelmed and outnumbered. Rather than give me side eye and stink eye they went out of their way to help me, it was really a surprise and so pleasantly unexpected
