A good museum for contemporary art. It's big but with a lot of hopeful empty space. It didn't take me that long to finish the displays. The art is beautiful but it needs bigger names to generate more appeal to the masses. Maybe they should reduce the $14 admission fee or just make it a free entry museum. Their gift shop is very nice, go check it out. There's a cafeteria but it was closed the day I was there. It's better to get there on public transportation than to hunt for parking spaces. Have a meal after the visit at one of the many nice restaurants nearby.

I have been visiting BAMPFA for the past couple of years on the first Thursday of the month, which is a free admission day. I always find their exhibits interesting if not fascinating. The building is impressive, the gallery spaces range in size from intimate to cavernous, making each perfectly scaled for the works presented. They have some gems in their permanent collection, which are not on permanent display but are instead intermingled with loans in their themed temporary exhibits. The staff at the front desk and bookstore are pleasant and helpful. I find their bookstore/gift shop to be very good, considering that BAMPFA is not a major museum. I would definitely recommend a visit on these free days. I've never actually paid admission, but I think it would be worth it, especially for those who aren't in town for these free Thursdays.

Management needs to train their guards diplomacy and manners. I have been to museums grand and small and only this museum did a staff member make me feel like I was committing a crime walking around without a sticker which the ticket seller forgot to issue to me when I PAID for my entrance (I even offered to show my receipt but the girl didn’t seem to believe that I had actually paid to enter). The guard should be made to observe at the big museums to learn how to do their job without offending guests. It ruined the experience for me. Traumatizing.

BAMPFA is a true Berkeley Treasure. They have a small but frequently changing exhibits in a nice venue that is BART accessible and across Oxford from UC Berkeley, which is also worth a walk through. There is a nice cafe in the museum. The true treasure is the Pacific Film Archive which has an excellent little cinema with comfortable seats. The films shown are often seldom shown classics in un-cut versions which are not otherwise available. The films are often preceded by brief talks by the film curators or UCB faculty. If alive, they sometimes have the directors give a talk. I highly recommend joining and getting on their mailing list.

We are members and love to come here for movies as the theater is excellent. The art museum is a good space, but the collection is of mixed quality. Come for the movies.

One of the best exhibitions I've ever attended at an art museum. I was in heaven. Yes, I do love Hofmann's abstracts and this was my first opportunity to get up nice and close (not too close!) and see all of his masterful brush strokes. We visited on July 4, which just so happened to be a free day :) with only moderate crowds. There are other interesting things to see at this museum, but we were here for Hans. And it did not disappoint. A++++++++ We also had a delicious lunch upstairs in the cafe! Highly recommend!
