Trinity (the vet tech assisting us) did an excellent job asking appropriate & meaningful questions, and she provided feedback in an empathetic manner relevant to our situation and goals.
Dr. Smithers (the vet on our case) was a different matter. Though we eventually came to a common understanding, the first 15 minutes of our discussion could not be described as empathetic or curious or inquisitive. It was clear through his conversation with us that he already felt he knew the problem YET ALSO evident he knew too little about our situation to even begin to presume. It's fine to not know our dog's history upfront -- that's why you ask questions or provide room for the story. He did not & was also being very dismissive of my wife's attempts to correct his incorrect assumptions (which included that we'd been giving excessive amounts of insulin, that our standard vet hadn't properly diagnosed our dog as diabetic, that a bad tooth couldn't be contributing to his eating/drinking problems "because dogs in the wild have tooth issues and will still eat out of survival"). We came in because our pug had been gradually declining in appetite & health over an acute 3 days without any obvious catalyst to us or our normal vet, culminating in him neither drinking nor eating (and losing part of a tooth!) on the night we went to the emergency vet - because by then, our vet had closed up for the day, and we were concerned our pug would suffer irreparable harm had we not acted. Our goal was stabilization, and though we appreciated the emergency vet's perspective, it took until the end of the conversation & our push-back for his tone to shift from combative & presumptive to collaborative.
They helped us get our little buddy stabilized, and that means the world to us. Trinity was a bright light in this encounter. But in an already-stressful situation, being confronted with the dismissals & presumptions from Dr. Smithers will cause us to look elsewhere first if another emergency arises.
EDIT: My wife reminded me how, at the very start of the conversation, Dr. Smithers jumped to recommending a specialized dog food as the solve post-stabilization -- to which we had to push back reminding him that *our pug wasn't eating at all* which was what led to the visit in the first place. It took a couple rounds of this back-forth for the vet to consider pain medication as part of the treatment plan (only after my wife's insistence) to help our pug get past his aversion to swallowing at all. We already use a recommended food for his diabetes. He wasn't eating ANYTHING, even his favorite treats (including honey). Felt like we were being sold a product.

My dog needed to see a vet urgently, but our standard vet was already closed for the day, and the 24 hour location I'd visited previously was closed as well. Called After Hour Animal Hospital and they told me that I should expect a wait, as they triage and see patients based on urgency, but that they would be able to see my dog that night, eventually. I did have to wait several hours, but my dog was ultimately seen, examined and treated. Overall it was a very positive experience, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. There was nothing to be done about the wait time, as they had several critical cases which took priority over the less severe issues with my pet.

This is the third time I have had to use the After Hours Animal Hospital. Each time, the staff members were so kind, efficient, and thorough in assessing my dog’s needs and diagnosing the problems, and for different issues each time (acute allergic response, pancreatitis, and attack by another dog). Their fees are reasonable for a vet emergency center as well. Thank you for taking such good care of my boy!

This place should not call themselves after hours animal clinic. My puppy was hit by a car. He was injured but still breathing. We rushed him to this place, bc I knew it was for emergencies. When we arrived it was 5:30. The guy at the front door was just looking at me and kept saying they were closed and wouldn’t open until 6. I called the number, he answered. I begged him to help me. Told him what happened. That my dog was injured but still breathing. He said there’s nothing I can do you’ll have to go to Cantrell. I pleaded with him that he wouldn’t make it for a drive to Little Rock in rush hour traffic, could he please call someone in early. He just kept saying “no, we don’t open until 6. I just answer the phones, and turned us away. My dog ended up passing about 30 minutes later. Now, had this guy had any heart or compassion for us, offered to have us come in a wait, or at least give us a room instead of leaving us outside in the rain, who knows if the outcome would’ve been any different. But, I watched my puppy take his last breaths in my arms in my garage bc this guy wouldn’t be bothered to even attempt to make a phone call or have any compassion So basically, to say after hours, it means not on Sunday, certain times on sat and only after 6 on Fridays will they help so just pray no emergency happens outside of those times bc they will do nothing at all but tell you no. This was my 8 year old little girls first puppy and the grief that has taking over our family no words can describe. I feel my situation was handled with 0 compassion and how you work at a place for animals and treat humans the way he did us. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Emergency or not. It was inhumane.

Our dog jumped out of our moving vehicle. It was a Sunday, so our regular vet was closed. I am so happy this clinic was available! Friendly, knowledgeable, caring staff. They treated our dog so well --thorough exam and gave us all his meds with detailed instructions and emailed instructions also. They made a follow-up call to check on his condition after a few days. I thoroughly recommend this clinic!

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. My husband and I were traveling out of state with our cat because he was sick. He had unfortunately passed away while we were traveling and needed to bring him to an after hours clinic and this was one in the area we found that did cremations. They had us wait in the lobby while we were both crying our eyes out, even though we had called ahead and answered all the questions over the phone before arriving, and had us fill out paperwork and had made sure to receive payment before putting us in a room to say our goodbyes. We paid for the cremation, after hours fee, had to pay for an urn (even though we had told them we were ordering a custom one), and shipping for out of state. I had called before we left the state to double check that they had the correct vet clinic info to ship to and they said yes they did and to expect him in 7-10 days. We get a call letting us know that we needed to come pick up his ashes TODAY. My husband then explained we live in south Texas and cannot just drive over to get him, and that we had paid for shipping and gave all the information. Whoever was on the phone with him basically called him a liar and said they would never charge us for shipping because they can’t ship animal remains. We had to scramble, but luckily I have family that lives 45 minutes from Little Rock and that could come to pick him up. When my aunt arrived she was told me opted out of having him shipped to us!! She and the person in the front went back and forth about it for a while before the person who was on the phone with him finally said he didn’t know that they could ship the ashes and did in fact tell him that. They then tried to get my aunt to purchase paw prints from them for us saying we never did. The icing on the cake is that the urn we were told we had to buy for shipping wasn’t even what he was put into. We already lost our cat, then had to deal with all this extra drama from this clinic when it should’ve been pretty cut and dry. The communication between the staff is extremely lacking, the compassion for families losing their pets wasn’t there, and overall it feels like we were repeatedly scammed for money. My husband has already told them they will need to refund us our money because they services we paid for were not given to us, and they said we should receive it within 48 hours. If we don’t we will be disputing the charges. I would not ever recommend this place to anyone in the area or traveling with their pets, and would suggest looking elsewhere. This clinic is a complete joke.

My Bitsy has injured her front leg, but this vet will not see her until we pay $500 upfront, they are ripoff artists. I would recommend that unless you're fairly well off financially, don't even consider using this veterinarian clinic.

Couldn’t have had a better experience, the doc was so informative and took her time to explain everything to me even at 2:30am. Front desk was also amazing, we were traveling from out of town and helped us find a new hotel… it was wonderful. Thanks for helping my baby Motley ❤️❤️❤️

I adopted my sweet 4 week old kitten a couple days ago with an upper respiratory infection and two infected eyes. She continued to get worse and started to sound really bad so I brought her in here. We got there at 11:30pm and they close at 12am Thursdays, but they were happy to take her back immediately and give her the care she needs. She was given antibiotics and drops for her eyes and nose right on the spot. They even gave her under the skin fluids because she was slightly dehydrated. I was personally walked through how to give her meds and was able to watch as it was demonstrated to me how to give her eye and nose drops. The attention and service here is quick and excellent! The staff and doctors are all extremely helpful and friendly. The pricing was as expected for a late night pet ER. She was given immense attention to detail and was very thoroughly taken care of. So so so grateful to have this place so close to us. Thank you so much to all the doctors and staff!

Friendly, competent care for my dog who was having an allergic reaction. He had to stay overnight and the staff gave him lots of fuss and love and called to check up on him after he got home.

If I could give zero stars to this joke of a clinic I would! They only care about money. We called ahead of time to see if we should bring our cat in because she suddenly was very ill, couldn’t walk without stumbling, refusing to drink or eat. They told us to bring her and to bring $1,200 upfront or to get approved for care credit on the way. I was approved for care credit, my daughter drove a hour to get the cat to the clinic but they refused to even see our cat right away, because of an issue with the care credit. They could see I was approved for $3,000 but since the lady from care credit didn’t give me an CVC number, they couldn’t run it right away and customer service was closed. Our cat became much sicker while waiting, she began breathing extremely fast, panting and they did nothing. Not even an assessment. My daughter watch dogs go back that were not critical over and over. I finally got the care credit to go through and they took care of our cat for the night. At 6am they told my daughter to come get her and take her to the vet in our city. The vet in our city could not believe a vet sent a cat with someone in such critical condition. They asked me how much money I was approved for I told them and that was exactly how much they charged. She was near death by the time we made it to our regular vet. $3,000 is what they charged me and my cat was kicked out the next morning in critical condition. In fact the vet I took the cat to afterwards was shocked at how much they charged me for a blood transfusion and lab work. She was worse than when we first arrived. While I understand that they need upfront payment, they could have at least put some oxygen on her or checked her out while we were trying to figure out the care credit situation (that they could see I was approved for). Instead that ignored her panting and lethargic, clearly very sick.

Worst experience ever had at a vet. I took my baby home when she was dying and they didn't even tell me. couple hours later had to take her to a vet in LR and when picking her up blood poured out of her nose and mouth!!!! If they would have explained to us she wouldn't make it through this we would have not brought her home to suffer. the LR vet told us she was beyond recovery........No pet owner should have to see this from their beloved animal. they need to get better techs to tell people when they animal is not going to make it through so we can make the decision that is best for both.
