Found this awesome place on yelp while traveling home from vacation in the Smokey Mountains. The husband and I split the Italian Stallion and a slaw dog. Delicious! The husband had dessert and got the mini banana split. He said it was heavenly! The staff was so friendly. We will definitely return.

A really nice find. It's rather small so it fills up quickly. Just sandwiches and ice cream. Portions were very large, service was very prompt and the food was really good.

The food was very good. Trowbridges in Florence is cheaper when compared, but I will return

Food was good and service was good as well. Just an FYI....its small busy place and its first come first serve. Price is totally reasonable. Choices of food are good but ice cream section is AMAZING!!! Its good ppace to chill and hang out with friends for quick bite or walk around the downtown area with delicious ice cream cone or shake.

I still think Payne's is a good place for ice cream and a blast-from-the-past ambience, but I have no interest in trying anything else from their lunch menu. This time around, we got the salad trio (with egg, shrimp, and chicken as my 3 salad selections) and a DIY sandwich (Turkey, lettuce, tomato, swiss, mayo on sourdough). All three salad scoops suffered from way too much mayo (for my taste, at least). Of the three types of salad, the chicken was the best in its simplicity. The shrimp salad, on the other hand, was a little strange for me. I haven't had shrimp salad before, so maybe they all are like that, but the suspicious pink/orange tinted, rubbery shrimp, and odd bits of dill just didnt sit well with me. The DIY sandwich didnt seem to actually have sourdough bread at all: it just tasted like plain white bread. There WAS mayo, but it was spread in the middle of the sandwich somewhere rather than onto the bread directly. This may seem like a small detail, but this middle-spreading actually creates a situation in which the sandwich contents, rather than happily staying put where they are lain to rest, may become prone to escaping from between those slices of bread. In three words: unnecessarily messy sandwich. Service was fine. Men's bathroom reportedly looked clean yet smelled disgusting.

What a fantastic stroke of luck to find this super "SodaShop/Cafe" on the corner in Scottsboro! It's been these since late 1800's but I had not been thru Scottsboro since late 1970's and had forgotten this eatery. Great place for great food AND fantastic ice cream! Superb service, super food, great prices! Plan a trip to Scottsboro ASAP! You may not want to leave!

Payne's lived ip to its reputation. Great sandwiches, soup and milk shakes to die for. Worth a stop after shopping at the Unclaimed Baggage Store!

This visit I ordered The Italian Stallion sandwich. "Two kinds of grilled salami, ham, pepperoni, melted provolone and pepper jack cheese, onions ,peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and creamy italian dressing on a grilled hoagie." This is my new favorite sandwich here now! It was amazing and so full of flavor. Don't forget the awesome waitresses. They are all so friendly and sweet. So next time you are in Scottsboro, AL I recommend stopping by Payne's Sandwich shop. You will leave with a full belly and a smile.
